  • This is priced and scoped for large enterprises, so an organisation with a few thousand straightforward agreements pays for capability it will not configure and would reach most of the same benefit with a lighter mid-market product.
  • Implementations run in quarters rather than weeks once integrations to CRM and ERP are in scope, and the business case usually assumes benefits that only start after the historic contract population has been migrated and tagged.
  • Migrating legacy contracts means extracting terms from signed PDFs, and automated extraction needs human review to be trustworthy, so the backlog of old agreements is a labour cost that is routinely left out of the initial estimate.
  • The platform is built on Azure with its strongest integrations in the Microsoft stack, which is an advantage inside a Microsoft estate and a source of friction for an organisation standardised elsewhere.

Tryton

  • Out of the box reporting is thin and there is no built-in business intelligence layer, so most deployments end up exporting to an external tool to get management reporting.
  • Documentation and community discussion are functional but sparse compared with commercial ERPs, which lengthens implementation for teams that have not worked with Tryton before and makes hiring experienced consultants harder.

Icertis: How is this different from storing contracts in SharePoint?

A document store answers where the contract is. CLM answers what is in it. If your questions are about locating files, a document store is enough. If your questions are portfolio wide, such as total exposure to a clause type or which agreements renew next quarter, you need the terms as data.

Tryton: What licence is Tryton under?

The platform and official modules are GPL-3.0-or-later. There is no paid enterprise edition.

Icertis: Do we need a legal operations team to make this work?

In practice yes, or someone doing that job under another title. The system enforces decisions about standard language, approval thresholds and acceptable deviation, and if nobody owns those decisions the workflow becomes an approval queue with no rules behind it.

Tryton: How long is a release supported?

Series are released every six months and supported for one year. Major versions get five years of long term support, so pin to an LTS release unless you can fund annual upgrades.
