Sana

AI-native learning and knowledge assistant, acquired by Workday in 2025

As of 31 August 2026, Sana's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. A Stockholm-built learning platform that indexes an organisation's content and answers employee questions directly rather than serving them a course to complete. Softwr lists it under LMS. Sana is made by Sana, a Workday company, available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What Sana does

Sana, formerly Sana Labs, built two products. Sana Learn is a learning platform where courses are authored in a block-based editor and delivered with adaptive sequencing. Sana Agents is an assistant that connects to an organisation's systems, Slack, Google Drive, Notion, Salesforce, Confluence, and answers questions with citations, which in practice absorbs a large share of what internal training was previously trying to teach. The distinguishing move was reframing learning as retrieval. Most learning platforms measure completions; Sana argued that the useful metric is whether an employee got the correct answer at the moment they needed it, and built search and an assistant as the primary surface with courses as a secondary one. That positioning is what attracted Workday, which described the acquisition as building a new front door for work. Workday signed in September 2025 and completed the acquisition on 4 November 2025 for approximately $1.1bn, with the integrated experience beginning to roll out during 2026. For a buyer that is the decisive fact. Sana is now a Workday capability, and the sensible question is whether you are a Workday customer. If you are, this is likely to arrive in your platform anyway. If you are not, you are evaluating a product whose roadmap is now set by an HCM vendor and whose standalone future is uncertain.

What people use it for

  • An organisation whose employees repeatedly ask the same policy and process questions in Slack and where the answer already exists in a document nobody finds
  • A Workday customer wanting learning and an internal assistant on the same employee record rather than a separate LMS contract
  • Onboarding at a fast-growing company where content goes stale faster than the training team can rewrite courses
  • Sales enablement where reps need an answer about a product or a contract term during a call, not a course to complete next week

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Sana.

  • Workday completed its acquisition on 4 November 2025, so Sana is now an HCM vendor's capability; if you do not run Workday, the roadmap will be shaped around a platform you do not use and standalone availability is not guaranteed long term.
  • Answer quality depends entirely on the state of your internal content, so an organisation with contradictory or outdated documents gets a confident assistant citing the wrong version, which is worse than not having one.
  • Permission-aware retrieval across many source systems is difficult to get exactly right, and a misconfigured connector can surface content to employees who should not see it, which makes the security review substantial.
  • Compliance-heavy training needs, such as certification tracking, regulator-mandated evidence and SCORM-based external content, are handled less thoroughly than in traditional learning management systems built for that purpose.
  • Pricing is unpublished and now negotiated in the context of a Workday relationship, which reduces a non-Workday buyer's leverage and makes a like-for-like comparison against a standalone LMS difficult.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Sana still an independent company?

No. Workday completed its acquisition on 4 November 2025 for approximately $1.1bn; the integrated experience begins rolling out in 2026.

Is it an LMS or a search tool?

Both, but the emphasis is on answering questions from your existing content. Traditional course delivery and completion tracking are secondary.

Does it work if we are not a Workday customer?

Currently yes, but the product direction now serves Workday's platform strategy, so weigh that in a multi-year commitment.

How is it priced?

Per employee per year, unpublished, and increasingly negotiated as part of a Workday agreement.
