CYPHER Learning

One learning platform codebase serving schools, universities and businesses with built-in AI course generation

As of 31 August 2026, CYPHER Learning's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. CYPHER Learning runs school, higher education and corporate learning on a single codebase, formerly sold as three separate products called NEO, MATRIX and INDIE. Softwr lists it under LMS. CYPHER Learning is available on Web, iOS, Android.

Overview

What CYPHER Learning does

CYPHER Learning is a learning platform used by schools, universities and companies. Until a 2023 consolidation the same underlying system was sold under three brands, NEO for schools, MATRIX for business and INDIE for individual course creators, and those are now one product with one name. It covers course delivery, gradebooks, competency mapping, automation rules, ecommerce for paid courses, and AI assisted course generation that drafts a course structure, content and assessments from a prompt and source material. The single codebase is the fact that should change a shortlist, in both directions. It is why the platform is unusually broad for its price, since features built for one sector arrive in the others, and it is also why neither sector gets a product designed only for it. A school evaluating it is buying software whose roadmap is partly set by corporate compliance customers, and a corporate buyer is buying software shaped partly by school gradebook requirements. Competency based assessment, which schools use for standards mastery and companies use for skills frameworks, is the clearest example of the shared design paying off. Buyers are individual schools and school groups, smaller universities, and mid sized companies without a large learning technology team. The trade off is ecosystem and scale. The third party integration library is smaller than that of the incumbent academic platforms, and very large institutions with heavy student information system integration requirements generally end up with a mainstream academic system instead. For school deployments the vendor contracts as a school official under FERPA with COPPA consent handled by the school or district, and buyers should confirm current Student Privacy Pledge status in procurement rather than assume it.

What people use it for

  • A school group that wants one platform across its schools without district scale procurement
  • A company that needs competency frameworks and skills mastery reporting rather than course completion counts
  • Training providers selling courses to the public who need commerce and delivery in the same system
  • Organisations wanting first draft course generation to reduce the authoring backlog

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about CYPHER Learning.

  • One codebase serves schools and companies, so roadmap priorities are split and neither sector receives a product designed exclusively around its workflows.
  • The three former brands, NEO, MATRIX and INDIE, still appear in older documentation, comparison sites and community answers, which makes independent research harder than it should be.
  • The integration library is smaller than that of mainstream academic platforms, so student information system and enterprise system connections more often need custom work.
  • AI generated course content produces a usable first draft and not a finished course, and institutions that treat it as finished ship material that subject specialists then have to rewrite anyway.
  • Large institutions with heavy compliance, accessibility audit and enterprise integration requirements generally find the ecosystem thinner than the incumbents, which raises the internal effort to reach the same standard.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is this the same product as NEO or MATRIX?

Yes. NEO for schools, MATRIX for business and INDIE for course creators were consolidated into one CYPHER Learning platform, so older reviews under those names describe the same lineage.

Does the AI actually build a course?

It produces a structured draft with content and assessments from your prompt and source material. It reduces authoring time and does not remove the need for subject expert review.

Is it suitable for a whole district?

It suits individual schools and school groups better than very large districts, where student information system integration depth and third party ecosystem usually decide the outcome.
