What Height does
Height is a hosted project management and issue tracking application built by Height, an independent venture-funded company. It covers the familiar ground of tasks, lists, custom fields, saved views, sprints and a per-task chat thread, and connects to the usual developer surroundings including GitHub, Slack and Figma. It is software as a service only; there is no self-hosted or on-premises option. In 2024 the company relaunched as Height 2.0, reorienting the product around autonomous agents rather than positioning itself as a faster interface to the same manual work. What distinguishes it is where the automation is aimed. Most tools automate transitions you configure: when this field changes, do that. Height's premise is that the tedious part of project management is judgement-shaped rather than rule-shaped, so its agents read task content to triage incoming work, spot duplicates, keep statuses and fields current and chase stale items. The commercial argument is a headcount one: it targets the coordination overhead that otherwise falls on an engineering manager or a part-time project manager, and if it removes even a few hours a week of that work per team, the seat cost is not the deciding number. The teams it suits are small to mid-sized product and engineering groups without a dedicated project manager, particularly those already irritated by Jira's administrative weight. The trade-offs are vendor and dependency shaped. How is this different from Jira automation?
Jira automation is rule-based: you define a trigger and an action. Height's agents read the content of tasks and act on judgement, such as recognising that two tickets describe the same bug, which no rule can express.
Can we self-host it?
No. It is software as a service only, with no on-premises or private-cloud deployment. If your requirements rule out a hosted tracker, this is not a candidate.
What happens to our data if the company fails?
You would need an export and a migration to another tool. This is the standard risk with a single-product startup, and it is worth confirming the export path covers task history, comments and custom fields before committing to it.
Does it work for non-engineering teams?
Yes, the views and custom fields are generic enough for marketing, operations or support queues. Its integrations, though, are aimed at software teams, so a non-engineering team gets less of the surrounding value.
Do the AI features need our tickets to be well written?
In practice, yes. Triage, deduplication and attribute maintenance work from what is written in the task, so the return is much higher on a team that already writes descriptive tickets than on one that does not.
