SAP Emarsys

Retail-focused engagement platform now sold and contracted through SAP

As of 31 August 2026, SAP Emarsys's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. Emarsys is a Vienna-built retail marketing platform that SAP acquired in 2020, and that ownership is the main thing a buyer needs to price in: contracting, procurement and roadmap now run through SAP even for customers with no other SAP software. Softwr lists it under Email Marketing. SAP Emarsys is made by SAP SE, available on Web, iOS, Android, REST API.

Overview

What SAP Emarsys does

Emarsys was founded in Vienna in 2000 and sells cross-channel customer engagement for retail and consumer brands: email, SMS, push, in-app, web channel and ad audience sync, driven by a contact database with product and transaction data. SAP acquired the company in 2020 and it is now sold as SAP Emarsys Customer Engagement, positioned alongside the SAP Customer Experience portfolio. The distinguishing asset is the tactics library, a set of prebuilt and instrumented retail programmes such as first-purchase conversion, replenishment, defection prevention and post-purchase cross-sell, each shipped with its own reporting. For a retail team without a large marketing operations function this is the difference between launching a lifecycle programme in weeks and building one from a blank canvas over a quarter, and it is the reason the product competes above its feature weight against more flexible platforms. Buyers are mid-market and enterprise retailers, and increasingly organisations already committed to SAP where the commercial conversation is simpler. The trade-off is the commercial model. Modules such as Smart Insight analytics, Loyalty and Predict are licensed separately, contact-based licensing counts the entire stored database, and support escalation runs through SAP processes rather than a direct line to the Vienna engineering team that most long-standing customers remember.

What people use it for

  • A retailer that needs standard lifecycle programmes live in weeks rather than building them from scratch
  • An SAP Commerce Cloud customer that wants engagement contracted on the same paper as the commerce platform
  • Consolidating email, SMS, push and paid audience suppression for a catalogue retailer
  • Teams that want per-programme revenue reporting without building attribution logic themselves

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about SAP Emarsys.

  • Core modules including analytics, recommendations and loyalty are licensed separately, so the platform fee in the first quote is rarely the number you eventually sign.
  • Licensing counts stored contacts, so a database retained for years costs money every month regardless of whether those contacts are still mailable.
  • Since the SAP acquisition, contracting and support escalation follow SAP processes, which lengthens procurement noticeably for buyers who are not already SAP customers.
  • The product is built around retail patterns, so B2B, media and subscription use cases sit awkwardly on a data model designed for orders and products.
  • Implementation normally involves a partner and runs to a quarter, so the speed advantage of the tactics library only applies after the integration work is finished.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Do we need to be an SAP customer?

No, it is sold standalone. But the contracting, legal and support processes are SAP processes, which is a real cost for smaller buyers.

What is actually included in the base licence?

Contacts, channels and the tactics library. Smart Insight, Predict and Loyalty are commonly assumed to be included and are not.

Is it suited to B2B?

Not really. The data model and the tactic library assume retail orders, products and repeat purchase behaviour.
