- Owning the sensor network means owning battery replacement, mounting hardware failures and eventual node obsolescence, and none of that appears in a first-year business case.
- Wireless mesh performance depends on plant geometry and metal density; sites often need more gateways than the initial survey suggests, and that is a change order.
- Analytics only pay back if somebody triages the findings, so plants without a reliability engineer end up buying KCF analyst services and arriving at a cost similar to the service-model competitors they were avoiding.
- The sensors and platform are a matched pair, so the hardware you own is not portable to another analytics vendor if you change software.
Materialise Magics
- New seats and modules have been subscription only since 15 May 2024, so the perpetual purchase route is closed and existing perpetual holders are on a shrinking island.
- Build Processors are licensed separately per machine family, so adding a new printer brand adds a licence line as well as capital cost, and a mixed fleet multiplies the software bill.
- The modules that deliver the biggest labour saving, notably e-Stage automated support generation, are paid extras, so the base seat alone leaves you doing manual support work.

Yes. KCF hardware is purchased outright, which is the main structural difference from per-machine service models.
Materialise Magics: Can I still buy a perpetual Magics licence?
No. Since 15 May 2024 Materialise sells new seats and new modules on subscription only. Existing perpetual licences continue to work but new capacity is subscription.
