The short version

  • Each has a real cost: Erbessd Instruments erbessd is a small manufacturer against SKF, Emerson and Bently Nevada, so global service coverage, calibration logistics and enterprise procurement processes are thinner than the incumbents.; Materialise Magics new seats and modules have been subscription only since 15 May 2024, so the perpetual purchase route is closed and existing perpetual holders are on a shrinking island.
  • They diverge on capability: Erbessd Instruments covers DigivibeMX, Materialise Magics covers Mesh repair.
  • Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.

Erbessd Instruments

  • A reliability engineer costing a twenty-machine wireless monitoring pilot from published prices before requesting capitalnot Materialise Magics
  • A contract vibration analyst needing a portable analyser and two-plane field balancing in one instrumentnot Materialise Magics
  • A plant that wants to keep its vibration database on site rather than in a vendor cloud for security reasonsnot Materialise Magics
  • Adding current and temperature monitoring to the same wireless gateway as vibration without a second platformnot Materialise Magics

Materialise Magics

  • A service bureau running several brands of metal printer that wants one preparation environment instead of five vendor slicersnot Erbessd Instruments
  • Repairing badly formed STL or scan-derived meshes that a machine slicer will not acceptnot Erbessd Instruments
  • Automating support generation on metal parts where manual support editing is the bottleneck in the processnot Erbessd Instruments
  • Simulating and compensating for build distortion before committing an expensive metal buildnot Erbessd Instruments

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

Erbessd Instruments

  • Erbessd is a small manufacturer against SKF, Emerson and Bently Nevada, so global service coverage, calibration logistics and enterprise procurement processes are thinner than the incumbents.
  • Nothing in the range carries functional safety certification, so it cannot perform machine protection or shutdown duties and must sit alongside a protection system on critical machines.
  • DigivibeMX is Windows-only, so an organisation standardised on managed cloud or Linux tooling has to maintain a Windows analysis workstation.
  • Enterprise integration is limited to APIs and generic protocols, so pushing findings into SAP PM or a large EAM will need custom middleware rather than a supported connector.
  • The hardware and software are a matched pair, so Phantom sensors are analysed through Erbessd software and cannot be pointed at a third-party analytics platform.

Materialise Magics

  • New seats and modules have been subscription only since 15 May 2024, so the perpetual purchase route is closed and existing perpetual holders are on a shrinking island.
  • Build Processors are licensed separately per machine family, so adding a new printer brand adds a licence line as well as capital cost, and a mixed fleet multiplies the software bill.
  • The modules that deliver the biggest labour saving, notably e-Stage automated support generation, are paid extras, so the base seat alone leaves you doing manual support work.
  • Materialise publishes no prices anywhere, and quotes vary by region and reseller, so two similar bureaus can pay materially different amounts for the same configuration.
  • It is Windows only and remains a desktop application, which sits awkwardly with the cloud direction of Materialise CO-AM and means preparation capacity is tied to specific workstations and licence seats.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

Erbessd Instruments: Can I actually buy sensors online?

Yes. Erbessd runs a public store listing individual sensors, modules and both gateways with prices and stock, which is unusual in this sector.

Materialise Magics: Can I still buy a perpetual Magics licence?

No. Since 15 May 2024 Materialise sells new seats and new modules on subscription only. Existing perpetual licences continue to work but new capacity is subscription.

Erbessd Instruments: Do I have to use the cloud?

No. DigivibeMX keeps data in a local database, and EI-Analytic is the optional browser-based alternative using the same sensors.

Materialise Magics: Do I need a separate Build Processor for each printer?

You need one per machine family, licensed separately from the Magics seat. Budget for it before you buy the printer.

Erbessd Instruments: How many sensors does one gateway take?

Gateway 2.0 supports up to 250 sensors; a USB gateway is available for direct PC connection.

Materialise Magics: Is Magics the same as CO-AM?

No. Magics is desktop build preparation. CO-AM is the Materialise cloud platform for AM workflow and production management, which absorbed the former Link3D product.

Erbessd Instruments: Can it trip a machine on high vibration?

No. It is monitoring and diagnostics only, with no safety certification for protection duties.

Materialise Magics: Does Magics slice?

It prepares and supports the build and hands off through a Build Processor, which produces the machine-ready file. The machine-specific processing lives in the Build Processor.
