The short version
- Each has a real cost: Autodesk Netfabb netfabb Ultimate has been retired outright, with no 2026 release and no renewals, so anyone who bought Ultimate is frozen on the 2025.1 build and must accept the repackaged Netfabb instead.; Prodsmart the product has been absorbed into the Autodesk Fusion family, so the standalone brand, pricing page and channel that earlier reviews describe no longer reflect how it is bought, and buyers must evaluate the current Autodesk packaging instead.
- They diverge on capability: Autodesk Netfabb covers Mesh repair, Prodsmart covers Mobile shop floor declarations.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 31 August 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Autodesk Netfabb
- A metal additive bureau predicting distortion on a laser powder bed build before committing twenty hours of machine timenot Prodsmart
- An aerospace supplier applying automatic geometry compensation so printed parts land within tolerance without iterative trial buildsnot Prodsmart
- A production department nesting hundreds of small parts into a single polymer build to raise volume utilisationnot Prodsmart
- An engineering team that already subscribes to Fusion and wants AM preparation without adding a second vendornot Prodsmart
Prodsmart
- A small manufacturer with older machines that cannot be connected to any network without a costly retrofitnot Autodesk Netfabb
- A plant that needs lot traceability for a customer or regulatory audit and currently keeps it on papernot Autodesk Netfabb
- A shop wanting live work order status without installing terminals and cabling on the floornot Autodesk Netfabb
- An Autodesk Fusion user looking for an operations layer from the same vendor as its CAD and CAMnot Autodesk Netfabb
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Autodesk Netfabb
- Netfabb Ultimate has been retired outright, with no 2026 release and no renewals, so anyone who bought Ultimate is frozen on the 2025.1 build and must accept the repackaged Netfabb instead.
- Autodesk has ended development of the Selective Space Structures, Optimization Utility and Lattice Topology utilities, which removes capability some customers specifically bought the product for.
- It is now only sold bundled as Autodesk Fusion with Netfabb, so a shop that has standardised on other CAD pays for Fusion entitlements it will not use.
- At around 4,415 US dollars per seat per year it is far above slicer-class tools, and the pricing is per named user with no floating option in the standard subscription, which hurts teams where the AM engineer role is shared.
- Machine coverage is broad but not universal, and the newest printers from smaller manufacturers often reach their vendor own preparation software long before a Netfabb profile appears.
Prodsmart
- The product has been absorbed into the Autodesk Fusion family, so the standalone brand, pricing page and channel that earlier reviews describe no longer reflect how it is bought, and buyers must evaluate the current Autodesk packaging instead.
- All data originates from operator declarations, so accuracy depends entirely on shop floor discipline, and a plant that cannot enforce scanning gets confident charts built on incomplete input.
- Because it reads nothing from machines, it cannot detect a stoppage the operator does not report, which means downtime analysis captures what people admit to rather than what happened.
- Scheduling and planning are shallow compared with a full MES or ERP, so most customers still plan elsewhere and use Prodsmart for execution only.
- Support and account management now run through a very large software vendor, and small manufacturers frequently report longer response paths than they had with the original company.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Autodesk Netfabb: Is Netfabb discontinued?
No, but Netfabb Ultimate is. There is a 2026 release of Netfabb, sold only as Autodesk Fusion with Netfabb. Ultimate licences cannot be renewed.
Prodsmart: Who owns Prodsmart?
Autodesk acquired it in 2022 and has integrated it into the Fusion product family as its operations offering.
Autodesk Netfabb: What does it cost?
The Fusion with Netfabb single-user subscription is listed at roughly 4,415 US dollars a year. Netfabb Simulation is quoted separately.
Prodsmart: Does it need my machines to be connected?
No. That is the central design decision. Operators declare production on mobile devices.
Autodesk Netfabb: Is there a perpetual licence?
No. Autodesk sells subscription only across its product range.
Prodsmart: Is it a full MES?
It covers execution, traceability and basic OEE. Detailed scheduling, quality workflows and controller level data are not its scope.
Autodesk Netfabb: Do I need Fusion to use it?
You do not have to use Fusion, but you now pay for it, because the bundle is the only way Netfabb is sold.
Prodsmart: Can I still buy it as a standalone product?
It is sold through Autodesk. Confirm the current packaging and pricing with Autodesk rather than relying on pre acquisition material.
