What Uber Freight does
Uber Freight is the logistics arm of Uber Technologies. It operates a digital truckload brokerage with a driver facing booking app, and a managed transportation business that runs the transportation function for shippers as an outsourced service on a network transportation management system. It also offers Powerloop, a trailer pool that lets carriers drop and hook rather than wait at docks, and shipper side analytics tooling. The fact that changes an evaluation is the ownership history in reverse. Uber Freight acquired Transplace from Greenbriar Equity Group in 2022 in a deal valued at roughly 2.25 billion dollars, and Transplace, not the Uber app, is the substance of what a large shipper buys today. Greenbriar then led a 550 million dollar investment into Uber Freight in 2023 at a reported valuation around 5.3 billion dollars, so the seller of Transplace became a shareholder of the buyer. Practically, that means the managed transportation service, the network of shippers and the TMS carry Transplace lineage and processes, while spot brokerage carries Uber lineage, and the two have been integrated at different speeds in different regions. The buyers split accordingly. Large shippers buy managed transportation and effectively outsource a department. Mid size shippers buy brokered capacity a load at a time. The trade off is control: managed transportation is a multi year engagement in which the provider holds the carrier relationships and the operating data, and unwinding it later is a genuine project, not a cancellation.
