What Rill Data does
Rill is a business intelligence tool built around fast slice-and-dice on a columnar engine. You install a binary, point it at data, and it builds a model and an exploratory dashboard which you refine in YAML alongside SQL models in a Git repository. The same project deploys to Rill Cloud for sharing, alerting, scheduled reports and embedding. DuckDB powers local development; ClickHouse, Druid, Pinot, Snowflake and others can back a deployed project. The fact that changes a shortlist is the cost structure. Seats are 20 US dollars a month on Starter and 30 on Growth, which reads cheap against Looker or Tableau. But hosted projects bill compute separately at 0.15 US dollars per compute unit hour on Starter, and Rill’s own pricing calculator shows a two-seat, one-project configuration totalling around 256 dollars a month, of which 216 dollars is compute. Anyone budgeting from the seat price alone will be out by an order of magnitude. Bringing your own database, Snowflake or ClickHouse you already run, removes the usage fee entirely, which is the configuration most existing warehouse owners should price. Buyers are data teams comfortable with Git who want dashboards reviewed like code and who care about sub-second interaction on event-scale data. The trade off is that Rill is opinionated about the metrics-layer-plus-explore-dashboard pattern; it does not do pixel-perfect operational reports, and business users cannot build anything without a pull request.

- The seat price of 20 dollars is misleading as a budget figure: Rill’s own calculator puts a small two-seat project at around 256 dollars a month, with compute making up the great majority.
- Dashboards are defined in YAML and SQL, so business users cannot create or change one without a developer and a Git workflow, which stalls self-service adoption.
- It is built for the explore-a-metric pattern and does not produce pixel-perfect financial or operational reports, so most organisations still need a second reporting tool.
- AI tokens and API calls are quota-limited per seat, with API overage at a cent per call, so programmatic consumers can create an unbudgeted line item.
- As a smaller vendor competing against Looker, Tableau and Power BI, the ecosystem of consultants, templates and trained analysts is thin, which raises the cost of hiring for it.
