What Sigma Computing does
Sigma Computing presents a familiar grid where business users filter, pivot, add calculated columns and build charts. Each of those actions is translated into SQL and executed on the connected cloud data warehouse, so the data never leaves the warehouse and there is no import step, no extract refresh schedule and no separate storage layer to keep in sync. Workbooks combine tables, pivots, visualisations and input tables, and write-back allows values entered by users to be pushed into warehouse tables for planning and scenario work. The commercial consequence of that architecture is the fact most buyers miss until the second quarter of use. Because every interaction is a live query, warehouse compute is consumed in proportion to how many people use Sigma and how curious they are. The Sigma subscription is only part of the total; the other part arrives on the Snowflake or Databricks invoice and is not controlled by the BI budget holder. Teams that roll Sigma out widely without setting up materialisation, warehouse sizing and query caching discover the cost in credits rather than in seats. The buyer is a mid-market or enterprise analytics team that has already committed to a cloud warehouse and wants business users to explore data without learning SQL or waiting on a modelling queue. The trade-off is that Sigma is worthless without that warehouse. There is no on-premises option, no support for a plain operational database as a primary source in the way the product is designed to be used, and pricing is not published, so evaluation requires a sales conversation before you know whether it is affordable.

Where it falls short
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Sigma Computing.
- Every user interaction is a live warehouse query, so compute costs rise with adoption and land on the warehouse invoice rather than the BI line item, which routinely surprises the team that approved the purchase.
- It cannot work without a supported cloud data warehouse, so an organisation running analytics on an on-premises database or a plain application database has nothing to connect to.
- Pricing is not published and seats are differentiated by capability, so budgeting requires a sales cycle and a headcount forecast before you can compare it with a tool you could simply buy.
- Performance is only as good as the warehouse behind it, which means slow or badly modelled tables surface as a slow interface and the fix is a data engineering project, not a Sigma setting.
- Statistical and scientific visualisation is limited compared with dedicated tools, so anything beyond standard business charting has to be done elsewhere and brought back in.

What does it actually cost?

Can business users break the warehouse?
They can run expensive queries. Warehouse sizing, query limits and materialised tables are the controls, and they need configuring before a wide rollout.
Is it a replacement for a modelling layer like dbt?
No. Sigma works best on top of modelled tables and is usually deployed alongside dbt rather than instead of it.
