Dovetail: Dovetail is the more established repository with a larger integration surface, worth it if the team is already committed to a research ops practice.

Qualitative research repository with AI notetaking, and an MCP server you can query from Claude
As of 31 August 2026, Marvin is free to use. A qualitative research platform that records, transcribes and analyses interviews, then keeps them as a searchable repository. Softwr lists it under Research. Marvin is made by Equafin Inc., available on Web.
Overview
Marvin, built by Equafin Inc. in Oakland, records and transcribes research calls, tags themes and emotion, cuts video clips and highlight reels, and keeps everything in a searchable repository with a reports library. Ask AI answers questions across a project or the whole repository, and an AI Moderated Interviewer can run unmoderated sessions on its own. Stakeholders can watch sessions live from a virtual observation room without joining the call. The distinguishing capability is the MCP server on the Pro tier. That lets Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot query your research repository directly, so a product manager can ask their own assistant what customers said about onboarding and get grounded answers with sources, rather than opening a research tool they never log into. For teams whose real problem is that research findings die in a repository nobody visits, that changes the distribution model of insight rather than just the analysis of it. Buyers are small to mid-sized user research and product teams. Two trade-offs matter. First, the seat model bites early: Starter includes only two full seats, so a team of four researchers is pushed to Pro regardless of which features they need, and the split between full, collaborator and viewer seats makes true cost hard to model when nothing above Free is priced publicly. Second, and more consequentially for regulated buyers, the compliance features procurement treats as table stakes, SSO, EU or US data residency, PII redaction and a HIPAA BAA, are bundled into a separately priced add-on available only from Pro upwards. The headline Pro quote is therefore not the price for anyone in healthcare, financial services or a European enterprise.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Marvin.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Dovetail: Dovetail is the more established repository with a larger integration surface, worth it if the team is already committed to a research ops practice.

Maze: Maze suits teams whose main need is unmoderated usability testing at scale rather than analysing recorded interviews.

NVivo: NVivo remains the choice for academic and rigorous manual coding work where you need full control over the codebook rather than AI-suggested themes.

Answered, with sources

Yes. Two full seats, three collaborator seats and five file uploads a month at no cost. It is enough to evaluate the analysis quality on real interviews.
Not published. Only the Free tier carries a price. Starter, Pro and Enterprise are all quoted.
Yes, but as a separately priced Compliance add-on from Pro upwards, not included in any base tier. Price it into the quote from the start.
It lets Claude, ChatGPT or Copilot query your research repository directly with cited answers, so stakeholders get findings without opening Marvin.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Marvin, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
