Card issuing and transaction processing APIs with just-in-time funding

As of 1 September 2026, Marqeta's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. A modern issuer processor whose real differentiator is just-in-time funding, deciding each authorisation in your own code. Softwr lists it under APIs. Marqeta is made by Marqeta Inc, available on Web, REST API.

Overview

What Marqeta does

Marqeta provides APIs to issue physical, virtual and tokenised cards and to process the resulting transactions. Its just-in-time funding model calls your endpoint at the moment of authorisation, so you approve or decline based on your own logic and fund the transaction only if you accept it. That is what makes on-demand delivery payouts, expense controls and buy-now-pay-later cards work without pre-funding every card. The economics are the part buyers underestimate. Marqeta is a processor, not a bank: card programmes run on a sponsor bank BIN, historically Sutton Bank and others, and the sponsor bank sets compliance requirements, approves your programme and can constrain what you launch. Programme revenue comes largely from interchange, and the commercial negotiation is about how interchange is split between you, Marqeta and the sponsor bank, alongside platform minimums and per-transaction fees. A programme with low card volume rarely clears the minimums. Buyers are fintechs, on-demand marketplaces, expense platforms and lenders issuing cards at scale in the US and, increasingly, Europe. The trade-off is that you are taking on programme management: disputes, chargebacks, fraud rules, network compliance and sponsor bank reporting are yours, not the processor plumbing you were buying.

What people use it for

  • A delivery marketplace funding courier cards only at the moment a courier pays for the order
  • An expense platform issuing a virtual card per subscription with merchant locks
  • A lender issuing a card that draws on an approved credit line rather than a stored balance
  • A fintech wanting the same issuing stack across US and European programmes

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Marqeta.

  • You still need a sponsor bank and a BIN, so the timeline and compliance burden of launching are set by a bank you must separately court and satisfy.
  • Pricing carries minimum monthly platform commitments, so a programme with modest card volume pays for capacity it never uses.
  • Programme revenue depends heavily on interchange, which means regulated debit interchange caps and European interchange caps materially change the business case by market.
  • Disputes, chargebacks and fraud losses sit with the programme, and teams that assumed the processor absorbed them discover a real operations headcount requirement.
  • Just-in-time funding makes your own authorisation endpoint a hard availability dependency; if it is slow or down, cards decline at the point of sale.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Do I need a sponsor bank?

Yes. Marqeta is an issuer processor, not a bank. Card programmes run on a sponsor bank BIN, and that bank approves and supervises your programme.

How does the pricing really work?

A minimum monthly platform fee plus per-transaction and per-active-card charges, offset by a negotiated share of interchange. The interchange split is the substance of the deal.

What is just-in-time funding?

Marqeta calls your endpoint at authorisation so you decide and fund each transaction, rather than pre-loading balances onto cards.
