What HID Global does

HID Global supplies physical access control readers and credentials, card issuance systems, mobile access credentials and workforce authentication products. Its software portfolio covers credential management, visitor management, identity and access management for physical security, and biometric enrolment. It is owned by ASSA ABLOY, which also owns much of the lock and door hardware market around it. The distinguishing commercial fact is the installed base. HID readers and the underlying card technologies are deployed in a large share of corporate and government buildings, so a decision about access control software is constrained by the readers already on the walls. Replacing readers across a large estate costs more than any software licence in the comparison, which means HID competes from a position most software vendors do not have. It also means legacy technologies persist: many estates still run older proximity and MIFARE Classic credentials with known cloning weaknesses, and the upgrade to Seos remains a hardware project. Buyers are enterprise facilities and corporate security teams, government agencies, hospitals and universities. The trade-off is that HID sells through integrators, so pricing, service quality and even which product versions you are offered depend on the channel partner rather than the vendor, and comparison shopping means comparing integrators.

Sales run through integrators, so the price you get depends on which partner quotes it and there is no published list to negotiate against.
Mobile credentials are charged per identity as an ongoing fee, which converts a one-off card cost into a recurring per-employee subscription that budgets rarely anticipate.
Large estates run mixed generations of readers, so a credential upgrade is a multi-year hardware programme and the software licence is a small fraction of the true cost.
Legacy credential technologies still widely deployed have documented cloning weaknesses, and HID commercial interest in selling the replacement does not remove your exposure in the interim.
The portfolio spans hardware, firmware and several acquired software products, so integration between HID own components is less consistent than the single-vendor pitch implies.

Do we have to replace readers to use mobile credentials?
