What Equals does
Equals is a browser spreadsheet built by Equals Technologies, Inc. To answer the category question directly: it is a spreadsheet with a database underneath, not a modelling tool wearing a grid. Workbooks contain connected sheets bound to a SQL query or a drag and drop query builder, and regular sheets of ordinary cells that reference the results. A1 notation works, F4 toggles absolute references, pivot tables are real ones with calculated fields and grand totals, and dynamic array functions such as UNIQUE, FILTER, SORT and XLOOKUP spill properly with a SPILL error when blocked. Cell values can be fed back into the SQL as query parameters. Underneath, connecting more than one source syncs your data into a Snowflake warehouse that Equals operates, with Fivetran ingesting non-SQL sources. The commercial story is a deliberate move upmarket that anyone holding an old shortlist needs to know about. In May 2023 there was a free plan. By October 2023 the cheapest option was 49 USD a month, by August 2024 it was 39 USD per seat, and today the price list starts at 24,000 USD a year for Essential, 36,000 for Business and 60,000 for Enterprise, billed annually with no monthly option and no self-serve path; every call to action is a demo request. What is metered has inverted too: seats are explicitly unlimited for both viewers and editors on all three tiers, and the meters are connector count, data refresh frequency and AI spend. Extra connectors are 199 USD a month for databases and scripts or 699 USD a month for everything else. Buyers are revenue operations and go-to-market teams at funded software companies, which is where the product has been repositioned; the changelog describes it as the AI-native spreadsheet starting with go-to-market analytics, and the use case pages are all software metrics such as net revenue retention and pipeline waterfalls. The trade-offs are the function library and where your data sits. The published list runs to roughly 150 functions against Excel with several hundred, with no LAMBDA, LET, OFFSET or INDIRECT, and the entire financial category is three functions, IRR, NPV and PMT, with no XIRR or XNPV. For a product sold to finance teams at 24,000 USD a year, anyone porting an existing model should check their formula inventory before signing.

- The financial function category contains only IRR, NPV and PMT, with no XIRR, XNPV, FV, PV, RATE or NPER, and there is no LAMBDA, LET, OFFSET or INDIRECT, so a substantial class of existing spreadsheet models cannot be ported without rework.
- No documentation of importing or exporting Excel files exists anywhere in the docs index; the supported file sources are CSV and Google Sheets and the only documented export is dashboards as PDF, which is a notable gap for a product positioning itself as a successor to Excel.
- Data freshness is a pricing lever rather than a setting, at six hours on Essential, one hour on Business and fifteen minutes on Enterprise, and the feature that removes row limits is itself gated above the entry tier, so the Essential row ceiling is neither published nor unlimited.
