Overview

What Clair does

Clair provides earned wage advances embedded inside payroll and workforce management products rather than sold as a standalone HR purchase. Employees enrol through the payroll or scheduling app they already use, receive a Clair spending account and debit card, and can draw against hours already worked. Advances are issued by Pathward, N.A., an FDIC insured bank, which matters because it puts the advance under a bank rather than a non bank lender structure. The distinguishing commercial fact is the fee position. Advances delivered in one to three business days carry no fee, and instant delivery to an external bank account costs $4.99. Employees who take their pay into the Clair spending account get instant access without that fee, and Clair earns interchange when they spend from it. Advance limits are conservative: typically up to $100 per advance and around $200 between paydays to start, rising with repayment history. That cap makes it a shift level cash flow tool, not an emergency fund. Buyers are usually the payroll and scheduling platforms themselves, with employers switching it on inside the tool they already run. Intuit added Clair on demand pay to QuickBooks Online Payroll and Intuit Enterprise Suite in September 2025. The trade off for an employer is control: you are enabling a third party financial product for your staff inside your payroll system, with a deposit account relationship you do not administer and a fee structure you cannot change.

What people use it for

  • A restaurant group already on 7shifts wanting on demand pay without adding another vendor contract
  • A small business on QuickBooks Payroll enabling early wage access inside its existing payroll product
  • An employer that wants a fee free option to be the default rather than a paid upgrade
  • A shift based operator using early pay access as a shift fill incentive without changing payroll timing

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Clair.

  • Advance limits start around $100 per advance and roughly $200 between paydays, so it covers a shift level cash gap and not a genuine emergency.
  • Instant delivery to an existing bank account costs the employee $4.99, so the free path in practice means opening a Clair account and card that the employee did not previously want.
  • The business depends on interchange from the Clair spending account, which means the design nudges workers to move their pay to a new account rather than keep their existing bank.
  • Availability is tied to payroll and scheduling partners, so an employer on an unsupported payroll system cannot buy Clair directly.
  • Advances are issued by Pathward, N.A. rather than Clair, so the terms and eligibility rules for the product ultimately sit with a bank that the employer has no contract with.
