Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler

Photogrammetry engine formerly sold as ContextCapture, now inside Bentley's iTwin line

As of 1 September 2026, Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. Turns photographs and laser scans into engineering-grade 3D reality meshes. Softwr lists it under CAD. Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler is made by Bentley Systems, available on Windows, Cloud.

Overview

What Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler does

iTwin Capture Modeler is the product Bentley sold for years as ContextCapture, and before that as Acute3D Smart3DCapture. It performs aerial triangulation and dense reconstruction on photographs from drones, aircraft, satellites and handheld cameras, optionally fused with point clouds from laser scanning, and produces textured 3D meshes, orthophotos, digital surface models and point clouds in formats including 3MX, OBJ, and Cesium 3D Tiles for streaming. The reason the rename matters is licensing. ContextCapture was historically sold with input-volume tiers, and the shift into the iTwin family brought Bentley's subscription entitlements and consumption-based Bentley Keys into the picture, alongside bundles such as the Reality Modeling WorkSuite that pairs the Modeler with reality data management. Buyers coming from an older perpetual ContextCapture arrangement need to establish exactly what their renewal converts to, because effective cost per project can move substantially depending on how much data is processed. Buyers are infrastructure engineering firms, surveyors, transport and utility asset owners, and anyone producing reality meshes destined for Bentley's own MicroStation and OpenRoads workflows. The trade-off is ecosystem gravity: the reconstruction quality is high and the output formats are open enough, but the licensing, the cloud processing option and the downstream digital twin story all pull towards Bentley products, and the pricing is not straightforward to compare against a flat-fee competitor.

What people use it for

  • A highway authority reconstructing a corridor from drone imagery for design work in OpenRoads
  • A survey firm delivering city-scale textured meshes to a municipal client for planning and visualisation
  • An engineering consultancy fusing terrestrial laser scans with drone photography of a bridge for condition assessment
  • A team publishing streamable 3D Tiles of a construction site so stakeholders can view it in a browser

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Bentley iTwin Capture Modeler.

  • The rename from ContextCapture is more than cosmetic: licensing moved into Bentley's subscription and consumption model, and existing perpetual users should confirm what a renewal converts to before assuming continuity of cost.
  • Consumption-based entitlements make the cost of a large reconstruction hard to predict in advance, which is awkward when you are quoting a fixed-price deliverable to a client.
  • The desktop engine is Windows only and reconstruction is compute-hungry, so meaningful throughput needs either serious workstation hardware or paid cloud processing.
  • Bentley does not publish a plain rate card and pricing varies by region, reseller and existing agreement, so two firms buying the same thing can pay very different amounts.
  • Value compounds inside the Bentley ecosystem, and a firm whose design work happens in Autodesk or Esri tools pays for a positioning it will not use while getting the same mesh a cheaper standalone photogrammetry package would produce.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is ContextCapture discontinued?

The name is. The product continues as iTwin Capture Modeler within Bentley's iTwin family.

Does it still support a perpetual licence?

New buyers should expect subscription or consumption-based entitlements. Confirm the exact conversion path if you hold an older perpetual licence.

Can it process laser scan data as well as photographs?

Yes. It fuses point clouds with imagery in a single reconstruction.

Do I need other Bentley software to use it?

No, output formats are usable elsewhere, but the commercial and workflow case is strongest if you already run MicroStation or OpenRoads.
