Nomad Sculpt

Digital sculpting on tablets, bought once, with no account and no subscription

As of 31 August 2026, Nomad Sculpt's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. A genuine multiresolution sculpting workflow on an iPad for the price of a lunch, written by one developer. Softwr lists it under CAD. Nomad Sculpt is available on iOS, Android.

Overview

What Nomad Sculpt does

Nomad Sculpt is a digital sculpting application for iPad and Android tablets. It provides voxel remeshing, dynamic topology, multiresolution subdivision, layers, masking, PBR material painting and an internal renderer, in a touch and stylus interface. It is a one-time purchase from the app stores, with no account, no subscription and no cloud dependency. What makes it commercially notable is that the sculpting workflow is real rather than reduced. Artists use it for finished concept sculpts and for 3D printing masters, not just for sketching, and the file goes out through OBJ, glTF or STL to a desktop pipeline. Against ZBrush, whose licensing sits inside a Maxon subscription, and against the general move away from perpetual licences, a serious sculpting tool bought outright for a tablet is an unusual proposition. The constraint is hardware, and it is a hard one. Sculpt detail is bounded by device memory, so a base-model tablet reaches a polygon ceiling that a higher-memory model does not, and the limit shows up when a sculpt is already underway rather than at purchase. The other constraint is scope: there is no meaningful retopology or UV work, so anything going into a game or animation pipeline still leaves for a desktop package.

What people use it for

  • Producing concept sculpts away from a workstation without carrying a laptop
  • Creating 3D printing masters on a tablet and exporting STL directly
  • Teaching sculpting fundamentals where per-seat desktop licences are not affordable
  • Sketching character and creature forms that are finished later in a desktop package

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Nomad Sculpt.

  • Polygon budgets are bounded by tablet memory, so a base-model device stalls at a fraction of the detail a desktop sculpting application handles, and the ceiling only becomes apparent once a sculpt is well underway.
  • One developer maintains it, so a bug that blocks your workflow waits on one person with no support channel to escalate through.
  • There is no serious retopology or UV unwrapping toolset, so anything destined for a game or animation pipeline has to leave for a desktop package regardless.
  • Rendering is presentation grade rather than production grade, so client-facing images generally need an export to a desktop renderer.
  • Sculpt layers and brushes are application-specific and the route out is OBJ, glTF or STL, so layered non-destructive data does not survive the transfer to another tool.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is it a subscription?

No. It is a one-time app store purchase with no account and no cloud service behind it.

Which tablet should I buy for it?

Buy for memory rather than for processor. Sculpt detail is limited by RAM, so a higher-memory model raises the ceiling more than a faster chip does.

Can it replace ZBrush?

For sculpting itself it goes a long way. For high-density production sculpts, retopology, UVs and pipeline integration it does not.
