The CFD solver most aerospace, automotive and turbomachinery engineering teams validate against, with physics models that have decades of published correlation behind them. Softwr lists it under CAD. ANSYS Fluent is made by Ansys, part of Synopsys, available on Windows, Linux.
Overview
Fluent is a finite volume computational fluid dynamics solver. It meshes a geometry, applies turbulence, combustion, radiation, multiphase or reacting flow models, and solves the governing equations, typically across dozens or hundreds of compute cores. It is used to predict drag on a vehicle, cooling in an electronics enclosure, mixing in a chemical reactor or flame stability in a gas turbine, in cases where building the physical prototype costs more than the licence. The distinguishing thing is validation history. Fluent's turbulence and combustion models have been benchmarked in peer-reviewed literature for thirty years, and regulators, certification bodies and internal engineering standards in aerospace and nuclear frequently name it explicitly. That is a commercial moat that has nothing to do with the user interface: an open source solver may be numerically equivalent and still fail because your customer's specification says the analysis must be reproducible in a named tool. Buyers are simulation groups inside large manufacturers and the engineering consultancies that serve them. The trade-off is cost structure. A Fluent seat licence is only the entry fee; running a large case in parallel requires high performance computing packs licensed by core count, and a serious solve capability runs into six figures a year before hardware. Synopsys completed its $35bn acquisition of Ansys in July 2025 and began combining the portfolios in 2026, so bundling, packaging and the sales relationship are all in flux.

Yes, but Ansys is now part of Synopsys following the acquisition that completed in July 2025, and the two portfolios are being combined.
Numerically it can cover a lot of the same physics at no licence cost, but it lacks the meshing workflow, support and the validation pedigree that certification and customer specifications often require.
There is a student edition with cell count limits, suitable for learning but not for production work.
