Overview

What 46elks does

46elks is a Swedish provider of SMS and voice APIs with phone numbers, based in Uppsala with further offices in Stockholm, Linkoping and Hudiksvall. The name comes from Sweden's country calling code, 46. It is independent, with no parent company and no acquisitions behind it. Its relevance is regulatory and geographic rather than technical, and it is more than a reseller: it operates as a Swedish electronic communications provider under the national Electronic Communications Act and the supervision of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority, which is why it tells customers those rules replace a separate data processing agreement. For an organisation subject to Swedish public sector procurement or to data residency expectations, buying telephony from a regulated Swedish company removes friction that a large American vendor introduces, and that friction is frequently the actual blocker rather than price or features. It publishes its whole rate card without a login in two currencies: Swedish SMS at roughly 0.047 euros per message part, Swedish landline calls at about 0.013 euros a minute, US messages at about 0.02 euros per part and US calls at about 0.02 euros a minute, with numbers from around 3 euros a month. It is bought by Nordic startups, public sector suppliers and small businesses with modest volume. The trade-offs follow from its size: limited global route depth, no round-the-clock support organisation, and a feature set covering SMS, voice and numbers only. Sending to the United States additionally requires buying a number first, and US inbound messaging and mobile numbers are not self-serve at all.

What people use it for

  • Swedish and Nordic products needing local numbers and compliant sender identities
  • Organisations that must contract and invoice with a regulated supplier inside the EU
  • Small teams wanting a minimal SMS API without an enterprise onboarding process
  • Internal alerting and two-factor systems with modest message volume

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about 46elks.

  • It is a small company, so global route depth, redundancy and round-the-clock support do not match the large aggregators.
  • Its advantages are Nordic and regulatory, so an organisation sending mainly to other regions gains nothing and pays more per message than it would at scale elsewhere.
  • The feature set covers SMS, voice and numbers only, with no WhatsApp, RCS, email or fraud products, so multi-channel needs a second vendor.
  • Sending to the United States requires purchasing a number first, and US inbound messaging and mobile numbers are not available self-serve at all.
  • US A2P traffic also requires 10DLC registration with its own fees and carrier surcharges, making a small European vendor a poor fit for a US-focused business.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Why choose 46elks over Twilio?

Only for Nordic and regulatory reasons: local numbers, sender identity handling, a supplier regulated under Swedish electronic communications law, EU contracting, and support in your own time zone. On global reach and price at volume the large vendors win.

Does 46elks publish its prices?

Yes, all of them, without a login, in Swedish kronor and euros. Swedish messages run about 0.047 euros per part and Swedish landline calls about 0.013 euros a minute.

Is it suitable for sending to the United States?

Poorly. You must buy a number before you can send there, US inbound messaging and mobile numbers are not self-serve, and US A2P traffic requires 10DLC registration with its own fees and carrier surcharges.
