Bandwidth

Voice, messaging and emergency calling APIs run on the company's own US carrier network

As of 31 August 2026, Bandwidth's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. A communications API provider that is also a licensed US carrier, so it terminates traffic on its own network instead of reselling another operator's. Softwr lists it under Telecommunications. Bandwidth is made by Bandwidth Inc., available on Web, APIs, Python, JavaScript.

Overview

What Bandwidth does

Bandwidth provides programmable voice, messaging, emergency calling and phone numbering APIs, together with SIP trunking for high volume traffic. The structural fact that separates it from most of the market is that it is a licensed carrier operating its own network in the United States rather than an aggregator layered on top of somebody else's. Owning the network has two commercial consequences. It removes a wholesale margin from every minute and message, which is why Bandwidth tends to win on unit cost once volume is real, and it gives direct control over regulatory functions such as E911 emergency routing and caller authentication that an aggregator has to obtain from its upstream. The corresponding cost is the commercial model: Bandwidth sells committed-volume contracts rather than a self-serve rate you can start using with a card, so it loses to the aggregators on the first afternoon of a project and beats them at scale. Its footprint outside the United States came by acquisition rather than by building, when it bought the Brussels-based numbering provider Voxbone in 2020 for 519.4 million dollars. It is bought by contact centre and unified communications providers, and by enterprises whose call and message volumes make a wholesale margin material. The trade-off is that none of this suits a team that wants to prototype this week.

What people use it for

  • Unified communications and contact centre providers needing wholesale voice termination under their own brand
  • Enterprises with high call volumes where a wholesale margin on every minute is material
  • VoIP deployments with US emergency calling obligations requiring E911 and dynamic location
  • Platforms needing local numbers across many countries from a single supplier

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Bandwidth.

  • Commercial terms are negotiated contracts rather than a published rate, so a small team cannot start without going through a sales process.
  • US A2P messaging still requires 10DLC brand and campaign registration, and those fees plus per-segment carrier surcharges are charged on top of the negotiated message rate.
  • The self-serve developer experience is weaker than the aggregators it competes with, so teams prototyping quickly start elsewhere and migrate later, if ever.
  • Its owned-network advantage is a United States advantage; international coverage arrived through the Voxbone acquisition and does not rest on the same model.
  • Committed volume pricing means an organisation whose traffic falls short of forecast pays for capacity it did not use.

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Bandwidth a carrier or a reseller?

It is a licensed carrier operating its own US network. That removes the wholesale margin an aggregator pays its upstream and gives direct control over routing and regulatory functions such as E911.

Do 10DLC fees apply on top of Bandwidth's rates?

Yes. US A2P messaging requires brand and campaign registration with The Campaign Registry, and the registration fees plus per-message carrier surcharges are billed in addition to whatever per-message rate you negotiated.

Did Bandwidth acquire Voxbone?

Yes, in 2020, for 519.4 million dollars. Voxbone supplied international phone numbering and became the basis of Bandwidth's coverage outside the United States.
