The short version
- Each has a real cost: Applitools the entry tier alone costs 667 US dollars a month on annual billing, a genuinely high floor compared to Percy's tiers or a plain screenshot-diffing open source approach.; TestRail pricing is per user per month on an annual commitment with a minimum seat count, so part-time testers, contractors and product managers who only read reports still consume paid licences.
- They diverge on capability: Applitools covers Visual AI comparison, TestRail covers Case repository.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

TestRail
- Producing evidence for an auditor that a specific test case set was executed against a specific release buildnot Applitools
- Coordinating a manual regression pass across several testers with per-tester assignment and live progressnot Applitools
- Running the same case set across multiple browser and device configurations and reporting on each separatelynot Applitools
- Combining manual results with automated JUnit output so one report covers the whole test effort for a releasenot Applitools
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Applitools
- The entry tier alone costs 667 US dollars a month on annual billing, a genuinely high floor compared to Percy's tiers or a plain screenshot-diffing open source approach.
- Professional and Enterprise tiers, which hold the more advanced authoring and unlimited execution features, are quote-only, removing pricing transparency exactly where a large buyer most needs it.
- Visual AI still occasionally flags false positives on genuinely novel layouts or animation-heavy interfaces, so a baseline review process is still needed, not eliminated.
- Checkpoint-based pricing means cost is directly tied to test suite size and coverage breadth, so expanding visual test coverage has a direct, compounding cost impact unlike time-based or seat-based pricing models.
- Teams migrating from a simpler pixel-diffing tool face real setup and baseline migration work to establish Applitools baselines correctly across a large existing UI.
TestRail
- Pricing is per user per month on an annual commitment with a minimum seat count, so part-time testers, contractors and product managers who only read reports still consume paid licences.
- Automated results only reach TestRail through the API or a trcli JUnit import, so connecting a CI pipeline means building and maintaining a mapping from test output to case identifiers, which becomes a small internal product of its own.
- The Jira integration links defects but keeps test data in TestRail, so release reporting spans two systems and anyone wanting a single view exports from both into a spreadsheet or a warehouse.
- The self-hosted edition is restricted to enterprise contracts, removing the low-cost on-premises route that regulated buyers previously used and turning a technical requirement into a pricing tier.
- Reporting is preset-based with limited cross-project aggregation, so an organisation running dozens of projects cannot answer portfolio-level questions inside the tool.
- As part of the Idera portfolio the product changes slowly and renewal pricing has trended upward, so buyers should negotiate multi-year terms rather than assume the first-year figure holds.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Applitools: How is Applitools priced?
By checkpoint volume, component or page-level screenshot comparisons, with the entry Starter tier at 667 US dollars a month for 100,000 component or 1,000 page checkpoints.
TestRail: Do read-only stakeholders need a licence?
Yes. Access is per named user, so anyone who logs in to view results consumes a seat, and reports have to be emailed out to avoid that.
Applitools: How is it different from Percy?
Applitools uses an AI-based perceptual comparison model designed to reduce false positives from rendering noise; Percy is generally pixel-diffing based and lower cost per screenshot.
TestRail: Can I still self-host TestRail?
Yes, but the server edition is sold only under enterprise contracts, so it is no longer the cheaper option it once was.
Applitools: Does it test individual components or only full pages?
Both; Storybook integration allows component-level visual testing in addition to full-page checks.
TestRail: How do automated tests report into it?
Through the REST API or the trcli tool importing JUnit XML from CI. You have to maintain the link between automation test names and TestRail case identifiers.
TestRail: Is it worth it if all our testing is automated?
Often not. Teams with no manual testing usually get enough from CI reporting, and TestRail earns its cost where manual execution has to be planned and evidenced.
