TestRail

The short version
- Only Percy has a free tier, so it costs nothing to try first.
- Each has a real cost: Percy pixel-based diffing generates more false positives from font rendering and anti-aliasing noise than Applitools' AI-based comparison, which trains some teams to start ignoring diff alerts over time.; TestRail pricing is per user per month on an annual commitment with a minimum seat count, so part-time testers, contractors and product managers who only read reports still consume paid licences.
- They diverge on capability: Percy covers Screenshot diffing, TestRail covers Case repository.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.
Where they differ

- Coordinating a manual regression pass across several testers with per-tester assignment and live progressnot Percy
- Running the same case set across multiple browser and device configurations and reporting on each separatelynot Percy
- Combining manual results with automated JUnit output so one report covers the whole test effort for a releasenot Percy
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Percy
- Pixel-based diffing generates more false positives from font rendering and anti-aliasing noise than Applitools' AI-based comparison, which trains some teams to start ignoring diff alerts over time.
- It is billed separately from core BrowserStack device testing, and stacking Percy with other BrowserStack modules such as Accessibility Testing materially increases total contract value beyond the headline device testing price.
- Paid tier pricing above the free tier is not transparently published as a fixed number, requiring a quote to know actual cost at scale.
- The free tier's 5,000-screenshot cap is easy to exceed for any team running visual tests across multiple browsers and viewports on every commit, pushing many active projects into a paid tier faster than the free number suggests.
- As part of a larger acquired portfolio, Percy's roadmap priority within BrowserStack's broader product strategy is less certain than it would be as a standalone company's sole focus.
TestRail
- Pricing is per user per month on an annual commitment with a minimum seat count, so part-time testers, contractors and product managers who only read reports still consume paid licences.
- Automated results only reach TestRail through the API or a trcli JUnit import, so connecting a CI pipeline means building and maintaining a mapping from test output to case identifiers, which becomes a small internal product of its own.
- The Jira integration links defects but keeps test data in TestRail, so release reporting spans two systems and anyone wanting a single view exports from both into a spreadsheet or a warehouse.
- The self-hosted edition is restricted to enterprise contracts, removing the low-cost on-premises route that regulated buyers previously used and turning a technical requirement into a pricing tier.
- Reporting is preset-based with limited cross-project aggregation, so an organisation running dozens of projects cannot answer portfolio-level questions inside the tool.
- As part of the Idera portfolio the product changes slowly and renewal pricing has trended upward, so buyers should negotiate multi-year terms rather than assume the first-year figure holds.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Percy: Is Percy free?
Yes for up to 5,000 screenshots a month with unlimited users and projects; beyond that it is a paid, quote-priced module.
TestRail: Do read-only stakeholders need a licence?
Yes. Access is per named user, so anyone who logs in to view results consumes a seat, and reports have to be emailed out to avoid that.
Percy: Is Percy included if I already pay for BrowserStack device testing?
No, it is billed separately by screenshot volume, not bundled into core device testing plans.
TestRail: Can I still self-host TestRail?
Yes, but the server edition is sold only under enterprise contracts, so it is no longer the cheaper option it once was.
Percy: How does it compare to Applitools?
Percy uses pixel-based diffing, which is generally cheaper per screenshot but produces more false positives than Applitools' AI-based perceptual comparison.
TestRail: How do automated tests report into it?
Through the REST API or the trcli tool importing JUnit XML from CI. You have to maintain the link between automation test names and TestRail case identifiers.
TestRail: Is it worth it if all our testing is automated?
Often not. Teams with no manual testing usually get enough from CI reporting, and TestRail earns its cost where manual execution has to be planned and evidenced.
