  • Automated results only reach TestRail through the API or a trcli JUnit import, so connecting a CI pipeline means building and maintaining a mapping from test output to case identifiers, which becomes a small internal product of its own.
  • The Jira integration links defects but keeps test data in TestRail, so release reporting spans two systems and anyone wanting a single view exports from both into a spreadsheet or a warehouse.
  • The self-hosted edition is restricted to enterprise contracts, removing the low-cost on-premises route that regulated buyers previously used and turning a technical requirement into a pricing tier.
  • Reporting is preset-based with limited cross-project aggregation, so an organisation running dozens of projects cannot answer portfolio-level questions inside the tool.
  • As part of the Idera portfolio the product changes slowly and renewal pricing has trended upward, so buyers should negotiate multi-year terms rather than assume the first-year figure holds.

TestRail: Do read-only stakeholders need a licence?

Yes. Access is per named user, so anyone who logs in to view results consumes a seat, and reports have to be emailed out to avoid that.

Xray Test Management: Is Xray priced per tester?

No. It is priced per user on the Jira instance it is installed into, regardless of how many of those users actually work in Xray.

TestRail: Can I still self-host TestRail?

Yes, but the server edition is sold only under enterprise contracts, so it is no longer the cheaper option it once was.

Xray Test Management: Who owns Xray?

Xblend, the company that grew out of the original XpandIT project, which Idera, Inc. acquired in 2021 along with the Xporter reporting tool.

TestRail: How do automated tests report into it?

Through the REST API or the trcli tool importing JUnit XML from CI. You have to maintain the link between automation test names and TestRail case identifiers.

Xray Test Management: Is there a free tier?

No published free tier exists for either Cloud or Data Center editions.

TestRail: Is it worth it if all our testing is automated?
