The short version
- Only Formlabs PreForm has a free tier, so it costs nothing to try first.
- Each has a real cost: Formlabs PreForm preForm only drives Formlabs printers, so the free software is really an entry cost to a closed hardware and resin ecosystem rather than a tool you can keep if you change machines.; Samotics sAM4 only sees what reaches the motor electrically, so it covers the driven train and misses un-driven equipment, structures, process conditions and anything downstream of a mechanical decoupling.
- They diverge on capability: Formlabs PreForm covers Automatic orientation, Samotics covers Electrical signature analysis.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

- A site building an energy reduction case, where measured motor efficiency and waste give the business case a payback that reliability alone would notnot Formlabs PreForm
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Formlabs PreForm
- PreForm only drives Formlabs printers, so the free software is really an entry cost to a closed hardware and resin ecosystem rather than a tool you can keep if you change machines.
- Formlabs resin is sold in proprietary cartridges, and the ongoing consumable cost over a printer's life dwarfs anything a paid slicer would have charged.
- Third-party resins can be used only through open material settings that step outside validated profiles, which affects print reliability and the comfort of warranty support.
- Parameter-level control is deliberately limited compared with open slicers, so advanced users cannot tune exposure and layer behaviour the way they can on an open platform.
- It is Windows and macOS only with no Linux build, which is awkward for research groups and labs standardised on Linux workstations.
Samotics
- SAM4 only sees what reaches the motor electrically, so it covers the driven train and misses un-driven equipment, structures, process conditions and anything downstream of a mechanical decoupling.
- Each monitored motor needs hardware installed in the motor control centre by a qualified electrician, and in older switchrooms that installation, including any required outage, can cost more than a year of the subscription.
- Per-asset subscription pricing means the cost scales linearly with the number of motors, so a plant with a thousand small motors faces a bill that a fixed-price plant-wide vibration system would not impose.
- Electrical signature analysis on variable-speed drives is harder than on direct-on-line motors, and results vary with drive type, so a heavily VSD estate should insist on a pilot on its own drives before committing.
- Nothing is published on price, contract length or minimum deployment size, and the vendor sells multi-year subscriptions, so early exit terms are a negotiation you have to raise yourself.

- Yes. Formlabs PreForm has a free tier, so you can try it without paying. Samotics starts at On request.
- What is Formlabs PreForm best used for?
- Formlabs PreForm is most often used for a dental laboratory preparing surgical guides on a validated resin and printer combination, a prototyping team running several form printers that needs job queueing and usage tracking, a jewellery workshop laying out castable patterns to maximise parts per build, an education lab that needs software with no per-student licence cost. Of those, a dental laboratory preparing surgical guides on a validated resin and printer combination and a prototyping team running several form printers that needs job queueing and usage tracking are not what Samotics is typically brought in for.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Formlabs PreForm: Is PreForm free?
Yes, with no licence fee, subscription or installation limit. It is free because it only prepares jobs for Formlabs printers.
Samotics: Does Samotics replace vibration monitoring?
For motor-driven assets it often does, and it reaches assets vibration cannot. For un-driven equipment and structures it does not apply at all.
Formlabs PreForm: Can PreForm drive a non-Formlabs printer?
No, and it never will. It is the front end for Formlabs hardware, which is where the revenue is.
Samotics: Do I have to buy Samotics hardware?
Yes. SAM4 requires the vendor's sensors fitted in the motor control centre; there is no software-only option.
Formlabs PreForm: Can I use third-party resin?
Only via open material settings, which take you outside validated profiles and the reliability those profiles are tuned for.
Samotics: Does it work on variable-speed drives?
It can, but performance depends on the drive and the operating profile. Pilot it on your own VSD assets rather than accepting a reference from a direct-on-line site.
Formlabs PreForm: Does it run on Linux?
No. Builds are provided for Windows and macOS only.
Samotics: How is it priced?
Subscription per monitored asset, quoted, typically on a multi-year term, with hardware and electrical installation on top.
