Samotics
Manufacturing
Condition monitoring of motor-driven assets using electrical signature analysis from the motor control cabinet

The short version
- Each has a real cost: Autodesk Netfabb netfabb Ultimate has been retired outright, with no 2026 release and no renewals, so anyone who bought Ultimate is frozen on the 2025.1 build and must accept the repackaged Netfabb instead.; Samotics sAM4 only sees what reaches the motor electrically, so it covers the driven train and misses un-driven equipment, structures, process conditions and anything downstream of a mechanical decoupling.
- They diverge on capability: Autodesk Netfabb covers Mesh repair, Samotics covers Electrical signature analysis.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Autodesk Netfabb
- A metal additive bureau predicting distortion on a laser powder bed build before committing twenty hours of machine timenot Samotics
- An aerospace supplier applying automatic geometry compensation so printed parts land within tolerance without iterative trial buildsnot Samotics
- A production department nesting hundreds of small parts into a single polymer build to raise volume utilisationnot Samotics
- An engineering team that already subscribes to Fusion and wants AM preparation without adding a second vendornot Samotics
Samotics
- A water utility monitoring submersible and borehole pumps that no vibration sensor can be fitted to without lifting the pumpnot Autodesk Netfabb
- A chemical plant with assets in ATEX zones where certifying and maintaining in-field sensors is more expensive than the monitoring itselfnot Autodesk Netfabb
- A food plant that wants pump and mixer condition data without opening guarding or taking a hygiene-critical line down to fit sensorsnot Autodesk Netfabb
- A site building an energy reduction case, where measured motor efficiency and waste give the business case a payback that reliability alone would notnot Autodesk Netfabb
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Autodesk Netfabb
- Netfabb Ultimate has been retired outright, with no 2026 release and no renewals, so anyone who bought Ultimate is frozen on the 2025.1 build and must accept the repackaged Netfabb instead.
- Autodesk has ended development of the Selective Space Structures, Optimization Utility and Lattice Topology utilities, which removes capability some customers specifically bought the product for.
- It is now only sold bundled as Autodesk Fusion with Netfabb, so a shop that has standardised on other CAD pays for Fusion entitlements it will not use.
- At around 4,415 US dollars per seat per year it is far above slicer-class tools, and the pricing is per named user with no floating option in the standard subscription, which hurts teams where the AM engineer role is shared.
- Machine coverage is broad but not universal, and the newest printers from smaller manufacturers often reach their vendor own preparation software long before a Netfabb profile appears.
Samotics
- SAM4 only sees what reaches the motor electrically, so it covers the driven train and misses un-driven equipment, structures, process conditions and anything downstream of a mechanical decoupling.
- Each monitored motor needs hardware installed in the motor control centre by a qualified electrician, and in older switchrooms that installation, including any required outage, can cost more than a year of the subscription.
- Per-asset subscription pricing means the cost scales linearly with the number of motors, so a plant with a thousand small motors faces a bill that a fixed-price plant-wide vibration system would not impose.
- Electrical signature analysis on variable-speed drives is harder than on direct-on-line motors, and results vary with drive type, so a heavily VSD estate should insist on a pilot on its own drives before committing.
- Nothing is published on price, contract length or minimum deployment size, and the vendor sells multi-year subscriptions, so early exit terms are a negotiation you have to raise yourself.

Choose Samotics if
- You need electrical signature analysis.
- You work on Web, Cloud.
- You also want switchroom installation.
Questions people ask
- Is Autodesk Netfabb or Samotics better?
- Neither clearly leads. Autodesk Netfabb starts at $4415/year and Samotics at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Autodesk Netfabb or Samotics?
- Autodesk Netfabb starts at $4415/year and Samotics at On request.
- Does Autodesk Netfabb or Samotics run on more platforms?
- Autodesk Netfabb runs on Windows, Desktop. Samotics runs on Web, Cloud.
- What is Autodesk Netfabb best used for?
- Autodesk Netfabb is most often used for a metal additive bureau predicting distortion on a laser powder bed build before committing twenty hours of machine time, an aerospace supplier applying automatic geometry compensation so printed parts land within tolerance without iterative trial builds, a production department nesting hundreds of small parts into a single polymer build to raise volume utilisation, an engineering team that already subscribes to fusion and wants am preparation without adding a second vendor. Of those, a metal additive bureau predicting distortion on a laser powder bed build before committing twenty hours of machine time and an aerospace supplier applying automatic geometry compensation so printed parts land within tolerance without iterative trial builds are not what Samotics is typically brought in for.
- What can Autodesk Netfabb do that Samotics cannot?
- Autodesk Netfabb covers Mesh repair, Build orientation and nesting, Support generation, Build simulation. Samotics covers Electrical signature analysis, Switchroom installation, Energy and efficiency measurement, Submersible and hazardous area coverage.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Autodesk Netfabb: Is Netfabb discontinued?
No, but Netfabb Ultimate is. There is a 2026 release of Netfabb, sold only as Autodesk Fusion with Netfabb. Ultimate licences cannot be renewed.
Samotics: Does Samotics replace vibration monitoring?
For motor-driven assets it often does, and it reaches assets vibration cannot. For un-driven equipment and structures it does not apply at all.
Autodesk Netfabb: What does it cost?
The Fusion with Netfabb single-user subscription is listed at roughly 4,415 US dollars a year. Netfabb Simulation is quoted separately.
Samotics: Do I have to buy Samotics hardware?
Yes. SAM4 requires the vendor's sensors fitted in the motor control centre; there is no software-only option.
Autodesk Netfabb: Is there a perpetual licence?
No. Autodesk sells subscription only across its product range.
Samotics: Does it work on variable-speed drives?
It can, but performance depends on the drive and the operating profile. Pilot it on your own VSD assets rather than accepting a reference from a direct-on-line site.
Autodesk Netfabb: Do I need Fusion to use it?
You do not have to use Fusion, but you now pay for it, because the bundle is the only way Netfabb is sold.
Samotics: How is it priced?
Subscription per monitored asset, quoted, typically on a multi-year term, with hardware and electrical installation on top.
