The short version
- Only Formlabs PreForm has a free tier, so it costs nothing to try first.
- Each has a real cost: Formlabs PreForm preForm only drives Formlabs printers, so the free software is really an entry cost to a closed hardware and resin ecosystem rather than a tool you can keep if you change machines.; Petasense petasense is now owned by AssetWatch, whose business is monitoring delivered as a managed service, so a buyer wanting self-service software should get the delivery model written into the contract rather than assume it.
- They diverge on capability: Formlabs PreForm covers Automatic orientation, Petasense covers Vibration Mote.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Formlabs PreForm
- A dental laboratory preparing surgical guides on a validated resin and printer combinationnot Petasense
- A prototyping team running several Form printers that needs job queueing and usage trackingnot Petasense
- A jewellery workshop laying out castable patterns to maximise parts per buildnot Petasense
- An education lab that needs software with no per-student licence costnot Petasense
Petasense
- A reliability team wanting continuous vibration data on assets currently covered by a quarterly walkaround routenot Formlabs PreForm
- A plant with variable frequency drive assets where generic vibration analytics produce too many false alarmsnot Formlabs PreForm
- Mixing battery sensors on accessible pumps with wired sensors on the handful of assets that would stop productionnot Formlabs PreForm
- A manufacturer with no in-house vibration analyst that wants the analysis delivered as a service rather than as a dashboardnot Formlabs PreForm
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Formlabs PreForm
- PreForm only drives Formlabs printers, so the free software is really an entry cost to a closed hardware and resin ecosystem rather than a tool you can keep if you change machines.
- Formlabs resin is sold in proprietary cartridges, and the ongoing consumable cost over a printer's life dwarfs anything a paid slicer would have charged.
- Third-party resins can be used only through open material settings that step outside validated profiles, which affects print reliability and the comfort of warranty support.
- Parameter-level control is deliberately limited compared with open slicers, so advanced users cannot tune exposure and layer behaviour the way they can on an open platform.
- It is Windows and macOS only with no Linux build, which is awkward for research groups and labs standardised on Linux workstations.
Petasense
- Petasense is now owned by AssetWatch, whose business is monitoring delivered as a managed service, so a buyer wanting self-service software should get the delivery model written into the contract rather than assume it.
- Hardware is required per measurement point and gateways are required per area, so the up-front capital for a plant-wide deployment is substantial and separate from the subscription.
- Per-asset subscription pricing scales linearly, which makes full coverage of a large population of low-value motors uneconomic compared with route-based monitoring.
- Nothing is published on sensor cost, subscription rate, gateway requirements or contract length, so a total cost of ownership figure requires a full sales engagement before you can compare it against anything.
- Battery-powered wireless sensors trade measurement richness for battery life, so the sampling rate and resolution are lower than a wired analyser would give, which limits diagnosis of high-frequency bearing defects on critical machines.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Formlabs PreForm: Is PreForm free?
Yes, with no licence fee, subscription or installation limit. It is free because it only prepares jobs for Formlabs printers.
Petasense: Is Petasense still a separate product?
Yes. It trades under its own name with its own product line, but the owner since January 2024 is AssetWatch.
Formlabs PreForm: Can PreForm drive a non-Formlabs printer?
No, and it never will. It is the front end for Formlabs hardware, which is where the revenue is.
Petasense: Do I have to buy Petasense hardware?
Yes. The platform is built around its own Motes and Transmitters; it is not a bring-your-own-sensor analytics product.
Formlabs PreForm: Can I use third-party resin?
Only via open material settings, which take you outside validated profiles and the reliability those profiles are tuned for.
Petasense: Can I get monitoring as a service?
Yes, through parent AssetWatch, whose model is condition monitoring engineers reviewing your data. Clarify which model your quote covers.
Formlabs PreForm: Does it run on Linux?
No. Builds are provided for Windows and macOS only.
Petasense: How is it priced?
Per monitored asset on subscription, plus sensors and gateways. Nothing is published.
