PrusaSlicer: A free open slicer with full parameter control if you want a machine that is not tied to one vendor's consumables

Free print preparation software that only drives Formlabs printers, because the money is in hardware and resin
As of 31 August 2026, Formlabs PreForm is free to use. PreForm is free with no licence fee, seat limit or subscription, and it is free because it only sends jobs to Formlabs machines. Softwr lists it under Manufacturing. Formlabs PreForm is made by Formlabs, available on Windows, macOS.
Overview
PreForm prepares models for Formlabs stereolithography and selective laser sintering printers. It imports STL, OBJ and 3MF, orients and lays out parts, generates and edits supports, estimates print time and material use, slices to the printer and monitors the job. It runs on Windows and macOS, is free to download and use with no licence fee, subscription or installation limit, and pairs with Dashboard, a free cloud service for monitoring printers, print history and material consumption across an organisation. Fleet Control extends that for sites running many machines. The commercial position is plain and worth stating: PreForm is not a product being sold, it is the interface to hardware that is. Formlabs makes money on printers, on proprietary resin cartridges and on service plans, so the slicer is free in the way a printer driver is free. That means the software will never gain the ability to drive a competitor's machine, and evaluating PreForm on its own merits is the wrong exercise. What you are actually buying into is Formlabs' consumables pricing over the life of the printer. Users are dental laboratories, jewellery makers, engineering prototyping teams and education, that is, anyone who has bought a Form printer or Fuse SLS system. The trade-offs are all consequences of the tie: no support for third-party printers, limited scope for third-party resins without leaving validated settings and warranty comfort behind, and print settings that are deliberately locked down compared with the parameter-level control an open slicer gives.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Formlabs PreForm.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Answered, with sources
Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.
Yes, with no licence fee, subscription or installation limit. It is free because it only prepares jobs for Formlabs printers.
No, and it never will. It is the front end for Formlabs hardware, which is where the revenue is.
Only via open material settings, which take you outside validated profiles and the reliability those profiles are tuned for.
No. Builds are provided for Windows and macOS only.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Formlabs PreForm, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
