The short version
- Each has a real cost: Danaos sales, implementation and support are concentrated in Greece and Cyprus, so an owner elsewhere gets a thinner local bench and has to rely on remote support across time zones.; ZeroNorth zeroNorth reported a net loss of roughly $65m for the 2024 financial year, deepening by around 57 per cent, so a multi-year fleet commitment should include contractual protection on continuity and pricing.
- They diverge on capability: Danaos covers Planned maintenance, ZeroNorth covers Voyage optimisation.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Danaos

- A third-party ship manager that must report vessel operating expenditure to multiple owners in a consistent structurenot ZeroNorth
- An owner whose procurement and maintenance data never reconcile because they sit in separate productsnot ZeroNorth
- A fleet needing full function on board when the satellite link is slow or intermittentnot ZeroNorth
ZeroNorth
- A tanker operator wanting speed decisions that account for the freight market rather than optimising fuel in isolationnot Danaos

- An owner needing EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime reporting derived from the same voyage data that drives operational decisionsnot Danaos

Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Danaos
- Sales, implementation and support are concentrated in Greece and Cyprus, so an owner elsewhere gets a thinner local bench and has to rely on remote support across time zones.
- The suite is configuration-heavy, and a superintendent generally cannot change a maintenance form or approval route without vendor involvement, which turns small changes into chargeable requests.
- The architecture is traditional, with vessel-side installations replicating to shore, so the browser experience trails newer cloud entrants and IT carries software to maintain on every ship.
- Public documentation and product information are sparse, so a buyer cannot evaluate the product independently and is dependent on vendor demonstrations and reference calls.
- Because everything shares one database, partial adoption gives away most of the benefit and replacing a single module later means unpicking the whole suite rather than swapping a component.
ZeroNorth
- ZeroNorth reported a net loss of roughly $65m for the 2024 financial year, deepening by around 57 per cent, so a multi-year fleet commitment should include contractual protection on continuity and pricing.
- The company consolidated operations during 2025, liquidating a Norwegian subsidiary, which is prudent cost control but means local presence and account continuity may not be what was originally sold.
- Pricing is per vessel and per module, so the headline vessel figure understates the cost of an owner who wants voyage, bunker and emissions capability across a fleet.
- Recommendation quality depends on the quality of noon reports and vessel data supplied, and an owner with poor reporting discipline will get poor optimisation regardless of the algorithms.
- It sits between technical performance tools and chartering systems and fully replaces neither, so most owners run it alongside an existing voyage management system and pay for overlapping capability.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Danaos: Is this the same company as the listed shipowner Danaos Corporation?
No. Danaos Management Consultants is the software business and a separate entity, although the names are shared and both are based in Piraeus.
ZeroNorth: How is ZeroNorth priced?
Per vessel and per module on subscription, typically multi-year and quoted. Nothing is published.
Danaos: Does it run on board with poor connectivity?
Yes. Vessels run local installations that replicate to shore, which is a deliberate design choice for constrained satellite links.
ZeroNorth: Is ZeroNorth financially stable?
It is well funded, raising $20m in February 2025, but reported a net loss of roughly $65m for 2024. Treat continuity terms as a contractual issue.
Danaos: Can I license only the planned maintenance module?
Technically yes, but the value comes from the shared database linking maintenance, purchasing and budgets, so partial adoption is uncommon.
ZeroNorth: Does it replace my voyage management system?
No. It complements commercial voyage management platforms; most owners run both and accept some overlap.
Danaos: Is pricing published?
No. Everything is quoted by fleet size and by the modules licensed.
ZeroNorth: Does it need onboard hardware?
No. It works from noon reports, AIS and existing vessel data feeds rather than requiring its own collection box.
