Verisk

Insurance data, ISO forms and rating content that most American P&C products are built on

As of 31 August 2026, Verisk's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. Less a software product than the data licence underneath United States property and casualty insurance. Softwr lists it under Insurance. Verisk is made by Verisk Analytics, available on Web, API, Windows.

Overview

What Verisk does

Verisk supplies data, analytics and rating content to the insurance industry. The part that matters most commercially is the ISO business: standardised policy forms, rating rules, loss costs and statistical services that carriers licence and file with state regulators. Around that sit catastrophe models, the ClaimSearch claims database, property data and estimating tools including Xactimate, plus underwriting and fraud analytics. It is a public company and, after divesting non-insurance businesses including its energy research arm in 2023, it is focused on insurance again. The fact that changes shortlists is that this is not a competitive software purchase in the normal sense. A carrier writing standard commercial lines uses ISO forms because regulators, reinsurers, agents and courts all understand them, and because building and filing proprietary forms in fifty states is an expense most insurers cannot justify. That gives the content a position closer to infrastructure than to a vendor product, and it shapes the negotiation: you are agreeing terms for something you need rather than choosing between two roughly equal options. Renewal leverage is limited and buyers should know that going in. The buyers are carriers, reinsurers, MGAs and increasingly claims organisations using Xactimate and ClaimSearch. The trade-off is cost and bundling. Verisk sells many products and pricing is negotiated per line and per usage, so the total across underwriting, claims and catastrophe modelling accumulates in a way that is difficult to see from any single contract. Insurers that manage it well maintain a central register of every Verisk agreement and renewal date; those that do not discover overlapping licences across departments.

What people use it for

  • A carrier filing standard commercial lines products that must use recognised forms and loss costs
  • A claims organisation checking submitted claims against the industry database for prior activity
  • A property insurer pricing catastrophe exposure for reinsurance placement
  • An MGA that needs bureau content without building and filing proprietary forms in every state

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Verisk.

  • The ISO content has no real substitute for a carrier writing standard lines, so renewal negotiations start from a position where walking away is not credible.
  • Pricing is negotiated separately per product and per line, and large insurers routinely find overlapping agreements across underwriting, claims and actuarial that nobody had counted together.
  • Circular updates to forms and loss costs must be loaded into your policy system on a schedule, which is recurring work that carriers with older platforms do partly by hand.
  • The breadth of the portfolio means account management is spread across product teams, so a problem in one service does not necessarily get attention from the people selling you another.
  • Usage-based components such as data prefill and claims searches make annual spend hard to forecast, and the variance lands in the year you grow fastest.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Can a carrier avoid ISO content entirely?

Only by developing and filing proprietary forms and rates, which a handful of large insurers do. For everyone else the filing and legal cost of independence exceeds the licence.

Is Xactimate part of Verisk?

Yes. It came with the Xactware acquisition and is the dominant property claims estimating tool in North America, used by carriers and by the contractors they pay.

Did Verisk sell off businesses?

Yes. It divested non-insurance units including its energy research business in 2023 and refocused on insurance data and analytics.
