Pop!_OS

Ubuntu-based Linux distribution tuned for developers and GPU work

Overview

What Pop!_OS does

Pop!_OS is a desktop Linux distribution from hardware maker System76, based on Ubuntu. Its two distinguishing choices both come from selling machines: a separate ISO with NVIDIA drivers preinstalled, and an auto-tiling window manager built into the desktop. The NVIDIA image matters more than it sounds. Proprietary GPU drivers on Linux are a well-known source of broken installs, and shipping an image where they already work removes the single most common first-day failure for people doing machine learning or graphics work.

What people use it for

  • Machine learning and graphics work needing NVIDIA drivers that work on first boot
  • Developers who want tiling without configuring a window manager
  • System76 hardware, which it is built around

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Pop!_OS.

  • Built primarily around System76 hardware, so other machines get less attention
  • Based on Ubuntu LTS, so packages lag current upstream
  • A smaller team than Ubuntu or Fedora, and releases have sometimes slipped well behind the Ubuntu base
  • The COSMIC desktop rewrite has been a long transition with the older GNOME-based version in maintenance

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Pop!_OS free?

Yes, free and open source. System76 funds it through hardware sales.

Why is there a separate NVIDIA download?

It ships with the proprietary GPU drivers already installed and working, which removes the most common first-day failure on Linux for GPU work.

Is it just Ubuntu?

It is based on Ubuntu LTS and uses its repositories, with a different desktop, tiling, an NVIDIA image and System76 tuning on top.
