Penpot: Open source design and prototyping platform
Overview
Debian is a free, open-source, and community-maintained Linux distribution representing what the project describes as 'a complete free operating system'. Unlike Ubuntu (which is based on Debian), Debian is developed and maintained entirely by volunteers and community contributors rather than a corporate entity. The distribution is known for stability, extensive package support (over 60,000 free software packages maintained by the community), and universal compatibility across computing platforms from supercomputers to personal computers and embedded systems. Debian maintains three active release channels: Stable (the recommended production release, currently version 13 Trixie), Testing (for newer software packages awaiting stable release, currently Forky), and Unstable (where active development happens, permanently known as Sid). Each stable release receives five years of support consisting of three years of full maintenance plus two years of long-term support (LTS). The project emphasises community participation and collaborative development through DebConf conferences, contributor networks and community forums. Support for Debian is community-driven through IRC channels on OFTC, mailing lists (particularly debian-user for English speakers), web forums, and direct contact with package maintainers. For organisations requiring professional support, the Debian project maintains a consultants directory of individuals and companies offering paid system administration, maintenance and custom functionality services. This stands in contrast to Ubuntu's corporate-backed support model.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Debian.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Yes. Debian is entirely free to download, use and modify. No licensing fees are required, and the project explicitly commits to remaining free.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Debian, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it. Tell us if any of it is wrong.
