As of 31 August 2026, openSUSE is free to use. openSUSE ships Tumbleweed, a rolling release gated by an automated test suite, and Leap, which shares binaries with SUSE Linux Enterprise. Overview
openSUSE is a project sponsored by SUSE that produces more than one distribution. Tumbleweed is a rolling release where each snapshot must pass the openQA automated test suite before it is published. Leap is a point release built from the same sources as SUSE Linux Enterprise, so it is effectively the free sibling of a commercial product, with a supported migration path onto SLES if you later want a contract. Slowroll sits between the two for people who want Tumbleweed with fewer, larger update batches, and Aeon and Kalpa are immutable desktop variants. The feature that decides purchases is the snapshot arrangement. Btrfs is the default root filesystem, Snapper takes a snapshot before and after every package transaction, and the bootloader can boot a read-only snapshot so you can roll the system back from the boot menu after a bad update. Combined with openQA gating on Tumbleweed, this is the most defensible way to run a rolling distribution on a machine you depend on, which is why openSUSE users tend to run rolling where users of other distributions would not. The long-standing differentiator, the YaST configuration and installation suite, is being retired. Leap 16 drops it in favour of the new Agama installer and Cockpit for administration, following SUSE Linux Enterprise 16. That invalidates a large amount of accumulated documentation, admin habits and internal runbooks, and it is the single thing an existing openSUSE shop should plan for before upgrading. Leap 16 also follows SLE 16 in requiring the x86-64-v2 instruction set, so some older hardware stops at Leap 15.
