What OpenSearch does
OpenSearch is a search and analytics suite forked from Elasticsearch 7.10 by AWS in 2021, after Elastic moved Elasticsearch off the Apache 2.0 licence. It includes the search engine and OpenSearch Dashboards, the fork of Kibana. It moved to Linux Foundation stewardship in 2024. Functionally it covers the same ground: full-text search, log analytics, observability data and vector search. The reason to choose it is licensing and governance — Apache 2.0 under a neutral foundation — rather than a feature advantage over Elasticsearch, which has continued developing independently.
