Meilisearch

Fast open-source search engine built for typo tolerance

Overview

What Meilisearch does

Meilisearch is an open-source search engine written in Rust, aimed at the search-as-you-type experience users now expect. Its design priority is defaults that work: typo tolerance, prefix matching and relevancy ranking behave sensibly out of the box, where heavier engines require tuning to reach the same result. The positioning is explicitly between rolling your own database search and adopting Elasticsearch. It is far simpler than the latter, at the cost of the analytical and log-processing capabilities Elasticsearch also carries.

What people use it for

  • Adding product or content search to an application without running Elasticsearch
  • Search-as-you-type interfaces where latency is visible to the user
  • Replacing SQL LIKE queries that cannot handle typos or ranking

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Meilisearch.

  • Not built for log analytics or aggregation-heavy workloads, which is where Elasticsearch remains the answer
  • Scaling across many nodes is less mature than the older engines it competes with
  • Memory use grows with index size, and large datasets need real capacity planning

Cross-shopped

What people choose instead of Meilisearch

Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Answered, with sources

Questions people ask

Each answer names the page it came from, so you can check it rather than take our word for it.

Is Meilisearch free?

The engine is open source and free to self-host. Meilisearch Cloud is a paid managed service.

Meilisearch or Elasticsearch?

Meilisearch is far simpler for application search and works well by default. Elasticsearch is the choice when you also need log analytics and heavy aggregations.

Does it handle typos automatically?

Yes. Typo tolerance is on by default rather than something you configure.
