NetApp-owned managed service for Cassandra, Kafka, OpenSearch, PostgreSQL and Cadence with a bring-your-own-cloud model
As of 31 August 2026, Instaclustr's pricing is not published; the vendor quotes on request. A managed open source data platform, owned by NetApp since 2022, that runs Cassandra, Kafka, OpenSearch, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse and Cadence in your cloud account or theirs. Softwr lists it under Databases. Instaclustr is made by NetApp, available on Cloud, Linux.
Overview
Instaclustr, now branded NetApp Instaclustr, provisions and operates open source data infrastructure as a managed service. It covers Apache Cassandra, Apache Kafka and Kafka Connect, OpenSearch, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, Valkey and Cadence, with monitoring, backups, patching, scaling and 24/7 operations included. Clusters run either in Instaclustr accounts or, under the bring-your-own-cloud model, inside the customer's own AWS, Azure or Google Cloud account and network. The distinguishing commitment is that the software is one hundred per cent open source and unmodified. There is no proprietary fork, no vendor-specific extensions and no licence terms that prevent you leaving, which is why it appears on shortlists in organisations that were burnt by the Elasticsearch, Redis or MongoDB licence changes. The bring-your-own-cloud option compounds this: the data and the nodes are in your account, on your cloud committed spend, and you keep them if the contract ends. Buyers are enterprises running several open source data technologies who do not want to staff an operations team per technology. The trade-off is scope. Instaclustr manages the cluster, not your data model, so a badly designed Cassandra schema or an over-partitioned Kafka topic is still your problem, and being a NetApp business unit means procurement and roadmap now sit inside a large storage vendor rather than a focused independent company.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Instaclustr.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

No. Its stated commitment is one hundred per cent open source with no proprietary extensions, which is the main reason licence-averse buyers choose it.
NetApp, which acquired the company in 2022. It is now branded NetApp Instaclustr.
No. There is an interactive calculator, but figures depend on technology, node size, cloud and region, and commitments are negotiated.
Yes, through the bring-your-own-cloud model, so the infrastructure spend also counts toward your cloud commitment.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for Instaclustr, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
