Overview
Nasuni is a cloud file services platform. Instead of file servers with their own storage and a separate backup system, each site runs an edge appliance that caches active files, while the authoritative copy of every file lives as versioned objects in customer owned object storage such as Azure Blob or Amazon S3. The filesystem, UniFS, keeps continuous versions rather than nightly backups, and global file lock coordinates writes when several sites open the same file. The distinguishing property is what happens after a failure. Because the appliances hold only cache and the truth sits in object storage, a destroyed site is recovered by standing up a new appliance and pointing it at the same volume, with files served on demand as they are requested rather than after a full restore. That collapses file server, backup, disaster recovery and offsite replication into one subscription line, which is the commercial argument and the reason it displaces backup products as often as it displaces NAS hardware. Buyers are distributed organisations with heavy unstructured data and many offices: engineering, architecture, construction, media and manufacturing. The trade-off is that you are renting a caching layer over storage you also pay for, so cold reads that miss the cache go to the cloud at cloud latency, and the object storage transaction and egress charges underneath belong to you rather than to Nasuni.
