What Panzura does

Panzura CloudFS creates a single global file system backed by object storage such as Amazon S3 or Azure Blob, with physical or virtual filer nodes at each site caching hot data locally. File locking is global, so two offices editing the same CAD model do not create conflicting copies, and the object store holds one deduplicated authoritative copy rather than a replica per site. Panzura Symphony adds data services and search across the estate. The distinguishing capability is global file locking with local performance. Traditional replication gives every site a full copy and hopes conflicts are rare; Panzura makes the lock authoritative so they cannot happen. For an architecture or engineering firm where one project file is hundreds of megabytes and three offices touch it, that removes a class of data loss that costs real project time. Buyers are architecture, engineering and construction firms, media companies and manufacturers with distributed design teams. The trade-off is the total cost picture. The licence is only part of it; you also pay for the object storage, the filer nodes at each site, and cloud egress every time data is read back from the object store into a site that has not cached it. Cloud egress charges apply whenever data is read from the object store into a site that has not cached it, and organisations routinely discover this during a restore or a new site rollout rather than during procurement.
Performance depends entirely on cache hit rates, so a team that works across the whole dataset rather than a hot subset sees latency that a local NAS would not have produced.
Licence cost is only part of total cost; object storage capacity, per-site filer nodes and egress all sit outside the vendor quote and can exceed it.
Recovery of a very large dataset is bounded by your internet link and by egress cost, so the practical recovery time after a site loss is often much longer than the snapshot policy implies.
Encryption keys can be held by the customer, but organisations that accept vendor-managed defaults give up the ability to render the object store unreadable independently, which some regulators now ask about explicitly.
