What Global Mapper does

Global Mapper reads, converts, analyses and publishes spatial data across an unusually wide range of formats: raster, vector, elevation, lidar and terrain, with coordinate system transformation inherited from Blue Marble's Geographic Calculator lineage. The Pro add-on carries the lidar work, point cloud classification, feature extraction, automatic building and vegetation extraction, pixels-to-points photogrammetry, and the scripting and terrain analysis a survey office actually uses. The thing that decides purchases is the licence. Blue Marble publishes its North American prices and still sells perpetual licences that do not expire and keep working on the activated machine. Standard is 700 US dollars node-locked, 1,050 floating or on a USB dongle, and 2,100 for a two-seat minimum network licence. Pro is 1,750 node-locked, 2,625 floating or dongle, and 5,250 network. Existing standard users on version 26 upgrade to Pro for 1,050 node-locked. Annual maintenance and support is separate and optional after the first year: 245 dollars for standard node-locked, 610 for Pro node-locked, more for floating. That structure means a survey firm can buy once, skip maintenance in a lean year and keep working, which is not possible with the Esri or Trimble alternatives. Buyers are survey firms, environmental consultancies, utilities, mining geologists and government agencies that need format conversion and lidar processing without an enterprise GIS licence. The trade-off is Windows-only, an interface that has accumulated features rather than been redesigned, and weak multi-user and web publishing compared with a real enterprise GIS.

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Global Mapper.

It is Windows only with no macOS or Linux build, so mixed-platform teams end up running a virtual machine and lose graphics performance on large point clouds
The interface has grown by accretion over two decades and features are scattered across menus, so new users are slow to find capabilities that are already installed
Node-locked perpetual licences are tied to the machine identifier, so a hardware refresh or a failed workstation means a support request rather than a login on a new device
Multi-user and web publishing are weak relative to Esri or QGIS with a server stack, so it is a desktop analysis tool and not a platform for sharing data across an organisation
Published prices apply to North America and differ elsewhere, so buyers outside that market must go through a reseller and cannot rely on the listed figures for budgeting

What is the difference between Standard and Pro?

Do I have to pay maintenance?

Only for the first year, which is included. After that it is optional; without it the software continues to run but you receive no upgrades or support.

Can it replace ArcGIS?
