Overview
GRASS GIS is a geospatial data management and analysis system covering raster and vector processing, terrain and hydrological modelling, image classification, spatiotemporal data handling and geostatistics, exposed through several hundred modules plus a Python API. It began at the US Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in 1982, became free software in the late 1990s, and is now maintained under the Open Source Geospatial Foundation by a volunteer and academic developer community, with releases in the 8.x line. What distinguishes it is analytical depth rather than presentation. Watershed delineation, cost surface and least-cost path analysis, solar radiation modelling, viewsheds, erosion modelling and the temporal framework for time series raster analysis are all first-class and scriptable, and many exist nowhere else without commercial licensing. The catch is the data model: GRASS insists on its own location and mapset structure with a defined coordinate reference system, and users who expect to open a file and work on it find that friction immediately. Most practitioners now use GRASS through the QGIS processing toolbox, which exposes GRASS modules with a conventional interface, or from Python scripts in a research pipeline. Buyers are universities, environmental agencies, hydrologists and researchers. There is no vendor and no licence fee; commercial support exists only through independent consultancies in the OSGeo ecosystem, so an organisation that needs contractual support has to arrange it separately and should confirm availability before making GRASS load-bearing.
