As of 1 September 2026, WhiteboxTools is free to use. An academic Rust library of over 450 geospatial tools, strongest in terrain and hydrological analysis. Softwr lists it under Maps. WhiteboxTools is made by Geomorphometry and Hydrogeomatics Research Group, University of Guelph, available on Windows, macOS, Linux.
Overview
WhiteboxTools is a command line geospatial analysis engine written in Rust, with Python and R front ends and a plugin for QGIS. It contains more than 450 tools spanning raster analysis, image processing, LiDAR point cloud processing, stream network extraction, terrain derivatives and, above all, hydrological analysis. Its depression breaching and flow accumulation algorithms are the reason many hydrologists use it in preference to the equivalents in ArcGIS or GRASS. What distinguishes it commercially is that it has no commercial existence at all. It was created in 2017 by Professor John Lindsay at the University of Guelph’s Geomorphometry and Hydrogeomatics Research Group and is released under a permissive MIT licence, which is why it turns up embedded inside other GIS products. There is no company, no support desk, no service level and no roadmap you can influence with money. Bugs are fixed when the research group has time. Buyers, or rather adopters, are hydrologists, geomorphologists, forestry and environmental analysts and GIS developers who need specific terrain algorithms and can work at the command line. The trade-off is the support question and it should be asked plainly: if a WhiteboxTools result underpins a flood model that goes to a regulator, the organisation carries all the validation risk itself, because there is nobody to escalate to. Teams that need an answerable vendor either buy commercial software or budget internal expertise to own the code.
