What ArcGIS Field Maps does
ArcGIS Field Maps is Esri's single mobile application for field work. It replaced four separate apps, Collector for data capture, Explorer for viewing, Tracker for location history and Workforce for assignment dispatch, consolidating them so a field worker installs one app instead of four. It handles offline map areas, form-based attribute capture with smart forms, high-accuracy GNSS receiver connection, indoor positioning, and location sharing so a supervisor can see where crews have been. The licensing is the thing that catches buyers out. There is no Field Maps price. Access is granted by ArcGIS user type: editing in Field Maps is included for the Mobile Worker, Creator and GIS Professional user types at no additional purchase, and you cannot buy Field Maps without at least one Creator user type in the organisation to author the maps. So the real question is not what Field Maps costs but how many Mobile Worker seats you need alongside the Creator seats that publish to them, and whether your data lives in ArcGIS Online or on ArcGIS Enterprise you host. Organisations budgeting a field data project from the app page alone consistently underestimate this, because the map authoring licence, the hosting credits and the field seats are three separate lines. Buyers are utilities, local government, environmental agencies and anyone whose authoritative asset data already sits in ArcGIS. The trade-off is that its value is entirely a function of the Esri platform beneath it; as a standalone forms tool it is expensive and inflexible compared with a dedicated mobile forms product.

- Field Maps has no price of its own, so a project budget built from the product page misses the Creator seats, the Mobile Worker seats and the ArcGIS Online credits or Enterprise infrastructure that actually cost money
- It only works against Esri feature services, so an organisation whose data is in PostGIS or a database without an ArcGIS layer must publish through Esri first, which is a platform decision rather than an app choice
- Named user licensing means occasional or seasonal field staff still consume a full annual seat, and organisations with a large pool of infrequent collectors pay for capacity they use a few weeks a year
- As a forms tool alone it is more rigid and more expensive than dedicated mobile forms products, so its value collapses if you are not already committed to ArcGIS
- The consolidation of four apps into one changed established workflows, and organisations that had built processes around Collector or Workforce have had to rework them on Esri's timetable rather than their own

Does it work offline?
Yes. Map areas are downloaded in advance and edits synchronise when connectivity returns.
Can it write to a non-Esri database?
