What Foursquare Spatial Studio does
Spatial Studio loads large spatial datasets in the browser, renders them with GPU-accelerated layers, and provides analysis over them using the H3 hexagonal grid: aggregation, joins between datasets, time animation and dashboard sharing. It grew out of Unfolded.ai, the company founded by the creators of kepler.gl and deck.gl, and it retains the open source lineage: kepler.gl and deck.gl are still open and widely used, and Spatial Studio is the hosted commercial layer on top. The naming is the thing a buyer needs to get right. Foursquare acquired Unfolded in 2021 and the product has since been folded into the Foursquare geospatial platform, sold as Foursquare Studio and now Foursquare Spatial Studio. There is no Unfolded to buy from and no Unfolded contract to sign. That matters commercially because Foursquare is primarily a location data business selling places and movement datasets, and the analytics tool is positioned to make that data useful. A buyer who wants a neutral visualisation platform is contracting with a company whose main revenue comes from selling the data you might otherwise buy elsewhere. Buyers are retail site selection teams, telecommunications planners, real estate analysts and marketing analytics groups who need spatial answers without a GIS department. The trade-off is that the free and open parts, kepler.gl and deck.gl, do much of the visualisation work already, so what you are actually paying for is hosting, data joins, collaboration and access to Foursquare's own datasets.
