Cockroach Labs: The cloud-native distributed SQL database

SQL transformation framework enabling analytics engineers to version, test and deploy models
Overview
dbt stands for "data build tool" and transforms the workflow of analytics engineers. Rather than writing isolated SQL files, dbt enables engineers to write modular, version-controlled, tested SQL transformations that build incrementally on one another. The framework includes built-in testing, automatic documentation generation, and deployment orchestration. The platform integrates with major data warehouses (Snowflake, Databricks, Azure, BigQuery, Redshift) and does not store data—models run queries within the user's warehouse, maintaining data residency and security. dbt operates through IDE extensions (VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code, Windsurf) for local development and the dbt Cloud platform for collaborative scheduling and monitoring. dbt's "Fusion engine" orchestrates job execution to reduce warehouse costs by 30% or more through intelligent scheduling. The platform provides rich metadata via dbt Catalog, enabling data discovery and lineage tracking. dbt competes with traditional ETL tools (Airflow) and newer platforms (Fivetran for extraction, Airbyte for integration). dbt differentiates by focusing on transformation after data arrives in the warehouse, positioning analytics engineers as the primary users rather than data engineers.
The honest half
Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about dbt.
Cross-shopped
Each pairing was judged by two reviewers asking whether a buyer would genuinely weigh the two against each other. The ones that failed were deleted rather than published.

Softwr does not host reviews and shows no star rating for dbt, because a rating we did not collect is not ours to publish. What is here is the pricing and platform detail from the vendor’s own pages, limitations we could state concretely, and alternatives a reviewer confirmed people weigh against it.
