Overview

What Xata does

Xata is a control plane for Postgres. It runs a fleet of Postgres instances on Kubernetes, building on CloudNativePG, and adds the operational pieces teams usually assemble themselves: copy-on-write branching at the storage level, scale-to-zero compute that comes back on the next connection, autoscaling and bin-packing of compute nodes, high availability with read replicas and automatic failover, point-in-time recovery to object storage, a serverless driver that speaks SQL over HTTP and WebSockets, and a REST API and CLI for control-plane operations with granular RBAC on API keys. The surrounding tooling is developed in the open too: pgroll for zero-downtime schema migrations, pgstream for replication that carries DDL changes, and a Postgres time-series extension. Xata Cloud is the managed service, running the same platform. The distinguishing thing is the licence combined with the branching. Every vendor in this space sells instant database branches; Xata is the one that publishes the platform that does it under Apache 2.0 and documents self-hosting it on your own Kubernetes. That matters commercially in two directions. It means a regulated or air-gapped organisation can have per-pull-request database branches without sending production data to a third party, and it means the usual objection to a startup database vendor, that your data is stranded if they change direction, is weaker here than for the alternatives. Neon, the obvious comparison, was acquired by Databricks in 2025, which is exactly the kind of event that makes teams ask what happens to the control plane they cannot see. The buyers are teams that want a production-sized database per branch, per preview environment or per agent task, and teams that need Postgres in their own cloud account for residency or compliance reasons. The trade-off is what open source means here: this is a Kubernetes platform, not a binary you install. Self-hosting it credibly requires people who are comfortable operating CloudNativePG, Kubernetes storage and Postgres itself, which is a different and larger skill set than clicking through RDS. If you do not have that team, you are buying the managed service, and then you are buying it from a startup rather than from a hyperscaler, with the escalation path and the compliance paperwork that implies.

The honest half

Where it falls short

Concrete and checkable, so you can decide whether any of them matter to you. This is the half of a review a vendor will not write about Xata.

Self-hosting means operating Kubernetes and CloudNativePG, so the Apache 2.0 licence removes the vendor bill but replaces it with a platform team, and a database platform is not something a part-time operator maintains safely.
Copy-on-write branches are cheap to create but diverge as they are written to, so a long-lived branch carrying a heavy backfill quietly accumulates real storage and the cost arrives later than the decision that caused it.
Scale-to-zero means the first connection after an idle period pays a cold start, which is invisible in a busy production database and very visible in a demo, a staging environment or a cron job that runs once an hour.
The Xata sold before 2025 was a different product, a proprietary API and SDK layered over Postgres, so tutorials, blog posts and SDK examples from that era describe something that no longer exists and existing users had to migrate.
As a managed service it competes with RDS, Aurora and Cloud SQL, and it is a much smaller company, so procurement, certification coverage and the depth of the support bench behind a 3am corruption incident are all weaker than the incumbent even though the underlying Postgres is the same.

Is it real Postgres or a compatible reimplementation?

Real Postgres. It runs upstream Postgres instances on Kubernetes via CloudNativePG, so extensions, the wire protocol and version upgrades behave as they do anywhere else.

Can I self-host the whole thing?

Yes. The platform is Apache 2.0 and designed for self-hosting a large number of Postgres instances on your own Kubernetes. Xata Cloud is the same platform run as a service.

Does branching copy my data?

No. Branches are copy-on-write at the storage layer, so creating one is near-instant regardless of database size and storage is only consumed as the branch diverges from its parent.

Is this the same Xata I used a couple of years ago?

No. The earlier product was a proprietary database API with its own SDK and search layer. The current product is a Postgres platform, and material written for the old one does not apply.

What happens to a branch when the parent changes?

A branch is a point-in-time fork. Later changes on the parent are not propagated, so long-lived branches drift and need to be recreated rather than refreshed if you want current data.
