What Bently Nevada System 1 does

System 1 is Baker Hughes' condition monitoring and diagnostic software for critical rotating machinery: steam and gas turbines, centrifugal compressors, generators, pumps and hydro units. It collects from Bently Nevada machinery protection systems, principally the long-established 3500 series and the newer Orbit 60 platform, and provides the orbit plots, shaft centreline, Bode and polar plots, full spectrum and transient capture that turbomachinery diagnostics actually require and that general-purpose vibration platforms do not produce. The commercial reality is that this is a follow-on purchase. Bently Nevada proximity probes and protection racks are installed on a very large share of the world's critical turbomachinery because they are API 670 compliant and specified by OEMs at the point the machine is built. Once that hardware is in place, System 1 is the software that reads its full data set including the transient and dynamic data other systems cannot access. Orbit 60 adds a built-in data diode for one-way transfer, which addresses the security objection to connecting protection systems to a plant network, and further tightens the pairing. Buyers are refineries, LNG plants, petrochemical sites, power stations and offshore facilities with machinery whose unplanned failure costs millions per day. The trade-off is cost and scope. System 1 is priced by machine train and connected data source, quoted, with annual support on top, and it is deliberately specialised: it is excellent on a dozen critical machines and a poor and expensive fit for the hundreds of balance-of-plant motors and pumps that a general condition monitoring platform handles cheaply.

  • Reading the output well needs a rotating machinery specialist; orbit and shaft centreline plots are not self-explanatory, and a site without that skill will either buy the Baker Hughes remote monitoring service or under-use the software.
  • The annual support and upgrade contract is a continuing cost that must be maintained to stay on supported versions, and lapsing it on a system tied to safety-relevant protection hardware is not a realistic saving.
