The short version

  • Each has a real cost: SolidJS much smaller ecosystem than React, so many problems have no off-the-shelf library; Zipkin less active development and smaller community momentum than Jaeger
  • They diverge on capability: SolidJS covers No virtual DOM, Zipkin covers Trace collection and search.
  • Prices and features above were last checked on 29 August 2026.

What people use each for

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.

SolidJS

  • Interfaces where update performance is the binding constraintnot Zipkin
  • Teams comfortable with React syntax who want finer-grained reactivitynot Zipkin
  • Applications where bundle size directly affects the businessnot Zipkin

Zipkin

  • Adding distributed tracing quickly without standing up heavy infrastructurenot SolidJS
  • Java and Spring Boot estates, where instrumentation support is long-establishednot SolidJS
  • Small deployments where Jaeger is more than the problem requiresnot SolidJS

Where each one falls short

Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.

SolidJS

  • Much smaller ecosystem than React, so many problems have no off-the-shelf library
  • The React-like syntax is misleading: components run once, and React habits produce subtle bugs
  • Smaller hiring pool and fewer learning resources than the mainstream frameworks

Zipkin

  • Less active development and smaller community momentum than Jaeger
  • Fewer features: sampling, storage options and UI are all more limited
  • The interface is dated and slower to work with on large trace volumes
  • Tracing alone still leaves metrics and logs in separate tools during an incident

Answered from the vendors’ own pages

SolidJS: Is SolidJS free?

Yes, open source under the MIT licence.

Zipkin: Is Zipkin free?

Yes, open source with no licence fee.

SolidJS: Is SolidJS just React without the virtual DOM?

The syntax is similar but the model is not. Solid components run once and reactivity is fine-grained, so patterns that are correct in React can be wrong in Solid.

Zipkin: Zipkin or Jaeger?

Jaeger has more momentum, more features and CNCF backing. Zipkin is lighter and quicker to stand up, and remains well supported in the Java and Spring ecosystem.

SolidJS: Why is SolidJS fast?

It compiles away much of the framework and updates individual DOM nodes directly, rather than re-rendering components and diffing a virtual DOM.

Zipkin: Does Zipkin work with OpenTelemetry?

Yes. OpenTelemetry can export to Zipkin, which is now the usual way to instrument for it.
