Sight Machine

The short version
- Each has a real cost: Poseidon Systems sensors must be plumbed into the lubrication circuit, so installation needs a shutdown, a mechanical fitter and pressure-rated connections, which puts the retrofit cost well above a magnetically mounted vibration sensor.; Sight Machine onboarding is a data engineering project measured in months per plant, so value arrives long after the contract starts and the internal sponsor needs the patience and budget to survive that gap.
- They diverge on capability: Poseidon Systems covers Metallic wear debris detection, Sight Machine covers Unified plant data model.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Poseidon Systems
- A wind farm operator monitoring gearbox wear debris, where a gearbox replacement offshore costs far more than instrumenting the whole fleetnot Sight Machine

- A quality organisation investigating a defect that appears at several plants with different equipmentnot Poseidon Systems
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Poseidon Systems
- Sensors must be plumbed into the lubrication circuit, so installation needs a shutdown, a mechanical fitter and pressure-rated connections, which puts the retrofit cost well above a magnetically mounted vibration sensor.
- It monitors the lubricant, so it says nothing about unlubricated failure modes, structural problems, electrical faults or process conditions, and it is a complement to vibration monitoring rather than a replacement for it.
- Poseidon Systems is a small specialist manufacturer, so a fleet-wide standardisation decision carries real supplier continuity risk and there is no second source for the same sensors.
- The software layer is thin compared with dedicated reliability platforms, so most buyers end up feeding the data into a SCADA or historian they already run rather than using Poseidon as their monitoring interface.
- No pricing is published for sensors, concentrators or software, and per-drivetrain costs are high enough that the business case only works on gearboxes whose failure is genuinely expensive.
Sight Machine
- Onboarding is a data engineering project measured in months per plant, so value arrives long after the contract starts and the internal sponsor needs the patience and budget to survive that gap.
- It assumes the instrumentation already exists, so a plant whose machines produce no usable data gets nothing from a data platform and needs to solve connectivity first with a different class of product.
- Pricing scales with plants and data volume and is never published, which puts it out of reach for single site manufacturers regardless of how relevant the capability sounds.
- It is not an MES and does not control or execute anything, so it sits on top of the operational systems and adds a layer to maintain rather than replacing one.
- Success depends on a central team that owns definitions and enforces them, and in groups where plants retain autonomy the standardisation the platform provides gets quietly ignored at site level.

Questions people ask
- Is Poseidon Systems or Sight Machine better?
- Neither clearly leads. Poseidon Systems starts at On request and Sight Machine at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Poseidon Systems or Sight Machine?
- Poseidon Systems starts at On request and Sight Machine at On request.
- Does Poseidon Systems or Sight Machine run on more platforms?
- Poseidon Systems runs on Web, Cloud, On-premise. Sight Machine runs on Web, API.
- What is Poseidon Systems best used for?
- Poseidon Systems is most often used for a wind farm operator monitoring gearbox wear debris, where a gearbox replacement offshore costs far more than instrumenting the whole fleet, a marine operator watching propulsion reduction gear for water ingress and metallic wear between dry dockings, a mining company monitoring slow-speed mill and conveyor drive gearboxes where vibration analysis gives late warning, a defence operator needing drivetrain prognostics with a supplier that has aerospace transmission monitoring provenance. Of those, a wind farm operator monitoring gearbox wear debris, where a gearbox replacement offshore costs far more than instrumenting the whole fleet and a marine operator watching propulsion reduction gear for water ingress and metallic wear between dry dockings are not what Sight Machine is typically brought in for.
- What can Poseidon Systems do that Sight Machine cannot?
- Poseidon Systems covers Metallic wear debris detection, Fluid quality sensing, Trident FQMS, Inline installation. Sight Machine covers Unified plant data model, Broad ingestion, Cross plant benchmarking, Root cause analysis.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Poseidon Systems: Does this replace vibration monitoring?
No. Oil debris monitoring catches gear and bearing wear earlier in slow-speed and heavily loaded drives, but it sees nothing outside the lubrication circuit. Most operators run both.
Sight Machine: Is this an OEE product?
It can produce OEE, but buying it for OEE alone is expensive. The reason to buy it is cross plant data standardisation.
Poseidon Systems: How are the sensors installed?
Inline in the lubrication circuit, which requires a mechanical installation and a shutdown, unlike an externally mounted vibration sensor.
Sight Machine: Does it need a historian?
It reads from historians, control systems and MES. Some source of machine data is a prerequisite.
Poseidon Systems: Is there a software-only option?
No. The software comes with the hardware; there is no route to buy the analytics and use another vendor's sensors.
Sight Machine: How long does a plant take to onboard?
Plan in months per plant, depending on how many sources and how inconsistent the existing definitions are.
Poseidon Systems: Is Poseidon Systems still independent?
Yes. It trades under its own name from Rochester, New York, with roots in the Impact Technologies prognostics business.
Sight Machine: Who is the buyer?
A corporate manufacturing, quality or digital function. It is rarely a plant level purchase.
