Sight Machine
Manufacturing
Enterprise manufacturing data platform that builds a plant data model rather than a dashboard

The short version
- Each has a real cost: Siemens WinCC Unified licensing counts PowerTags, and archived tags are licensed separately from displayed tags, so a project that adds historian logging late can breach a tier and trigger an unbudgeted step-up purchase.; Sight Machine onboarding is a data engineering project measured in months per plant, so value arrives long after the contract starts and the internal sponsor needs the patience and budget to survive that gap.
- They diverge on capability: Siemens WinCC Unified covers TIA Portal engineering, Sight Machine covers Unified plant data model.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

What people use each for
The jobs each tool is most often brought in to do.
Siemens WinCC Unified
- A machine builder standardising on S7-1500 who wants HMI screens engineered in the same project as the PLC codenot Sight Machine
- Replacing a WinCC V7 plant SCADA before the 2027 support cut-off without changing controller vendornot Sight Machine
- A line supervisory system where operators and supervisors need browser access from tablets with no client software rolloutnot Sight Machine
- A plant already committed to the TIA Portal toolchain, where the cost of a rival SCADA is the second engineering environment and the second set of skills rather than the licencenot Sight Machine
Sight Machine
- A corporate operations team that cannot compare plant performance because every site defines a stoppage differentlynot Siemens WinCC Unified
- A manufacturer whose historian data is plentiful but has never been modelled into anything a business can querynot Siemens WinCC Unified
- A group standardising manufacturing reporting into a cloud data warehouse alongside finance and supply chain datanot Siemens WinCC Unified
- A quality organisation investigating a defect that appears at several plants with different equipmentnot Siemens WinCC Unified
Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
Siemens WinCC Unified
- Licensing counts PowerTags, and archived tags are licensed separately from displayed tags, so a project that adds historian logging late can breach a tier and trigger an unbudgeted step-up purchase.
- There is no migration tool that converts a WinCC V7 project to Unified, so leaving the classic line before its 2027 support end means rebuilding screens, scripts and alarm configuration by hand.
- Scripting moved from VBScript to JavaScript, which invalidates the script libraries in-house engineers accumulated over a decade on classic WinCC.
- It is effectively bound to the Siemens controller stack; connecting Rockwell or Mitsubishi PLCs works through OPC UA but loses the shared tag database that is the main reason to buy it.
- Three unrelated products share the WinCC name, and buyers who specify WinCC without saying Unified, V7 or OA regularly receive quotes for the wrong platform with different licensing and a different contractor pool.
Sight Machine
- Onboarding is a data engineering project measured in months per plant, so value arrives long after the contract starts and the internal sponsor needs the patience and budget to survive that gap.
- It assumes the instrumentation already exists, so a plant whose machines produce no usable data gets nothing from a data platform and needs to solve connectivity first with a different class of product.
- Pricing scales with plants and data volume and is never published, which puts it out of reach for single site manufacturers regardless of how relevant the capability sounds.
- It is not an MES and does not control or execute anything, so it sits on top of the operational systems and adds a layer to maintain rather than replacing one.
- Success depends on a central team that owns definitions and enforces them, and in groups where plants retain autonomy the standardisation the platform provides gets quietly ignored at site level.

Questions people ask
- Is Siemens WinCC Unified or Sight Machine better?
- Neither clearly leads. Siemens WinCC Unified starts at On request and Sight Machine at On request, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, Siemens WinCC Unified or Sight Machine?
- Siemens WinCC Unified starts at On request and Sight Machine at On request.
- Does Siemens WinCC Unified or Sight Machine run on more platforms?
- Siemens WinCC Unified runs on Windows, Web, Linux. Sight Machine runs on Web, API.
- What is Siemens WinCC Unified best used for?
- Siemens WinCC Unified is most often used for a machine builder standardising on s7-1500 who wants hmi screens engineered in the same project as the plc code, replacing a wincc v7 plant scada before the 2027 support cut-off without changing controller vendor, a line supervisory system where operators and supervisors need browser access from tablets with no client software rollout, a plant already committed to the tia portal toolchain, where the cost of a rival scada is the second engineering environment and the second set of skills rather than the licence. Of those, a machine builder standardising on s7-1500 who wants hmi screens engineered in the same project as the plc code and replacing a wincc v7 plant scada before the 2027 support cut-off without changing controller vendor are not what Sight Machine is typically brought in for.

Answered from the vendors’ own pages
Siemens WinCC Unified: Should I buy WinCC Unified or WinCC V7?
Unified, for any new project. V7 and V8 receive no new features and support ends in 2027.
Sight Machine: Is this an OEE product?
It can produce OEE, but buying it for OEE alone is expensive. The reason to buy it is cross plant data standardisation.
Siemens WinCC Unified: Is WinCC OA the same product?
No. WinCC OA came from ETM, has its own engineering environment and licensing, and is aimed at very large distributed systems. It shares only the brand.
Sight Machine: Does it need a historian?
It reads from historians, control systems and MES. Some source of machine data is a prerequisite.
Siemens WinCC Unified: What is a PowerTag?
An externally connected process variable in the runtime. Internal tags do not count, but archived tags are licensed separately from displayed ones.
Sight Machine: How long does a plant take to onboard?
Plan in months per plant, depending on how many sources and how inconsistent the existing definitions are.
Siemens WinCC Unified: Can operators use it from a browser without installing anything?
Yes, the runtime is HTML5, but concurrent browser clients need WebUX or Unified client licences.
Sight Machine: Who is the buyer?
A corporate manufacturing, quality or digital function. It is rarely a plant level purchase.
