RealityScan vs Solid Edge

RealityScan
CAD
The photogrammetry engine formerly called RealityCapture, free below a one million dollar revenue line

The short version
- Only RealityScan has a free tier, so it costs nothing to try first.
- Each has a real cost: RealityScan the free tier is bounded by company revenue rather than by usage, so a business crossing one million US dollars of turnover acquires a per-seat cost overnight for software its workflow now depends on; Solid Edge candidate list contains only one genuine competitor (Siemens NX from same vendor); very limited competing options in the provided list
- They diverge on capability: RealityScan covers Photogrammetric reconstruction, Solid Edge covers Synchronous technology.
- Prices and features above were last checked on 1 September 2026.

Where each one falls short
Documented limitations, not opinions. Every one is a constraint you would hit in normal use.
RealityScan
- The free tier is bounded by company revenue rather than by usage, so a business crossing one million US dollars of turnover acquires a per-seat cost overnight for software its workflow now depends on
- New perpetual licences are no longer sold, so an organisation that deliberately avoided subscription software has no route in; existing perpetual holders keep their version but stop receiving updates unless they accept the current terms
- It is Windows only and needs an NVIDIA CUDA capable GPU, which excludes macOS studios and makes the real cost of adoption a workstation purchase rather than a licence
- The rename from RealityCapture to RealityScan in 2025 means tutorials, forum answers and third party pipeline documentation are split across two names and several licensing regimes, and much of it is now wrong about price
- The interface assumes photogrammetry knowledge; alignment failures, control point placement and reconstruction region setup are not guided, so a team without an experienced operator produces poor models quickly rather than good ones slowly
Solid Edge
- Candidate list contains only one genuine competitor (Siemens NX from same vendor); very limited competing options in the provided list
- Cloud-only platform with no traditional desktop licensing option; requires constant internet connectivity
- Limited third-party plugin ecosystem compared to standalone CAD tools
- Advanced simulation and generative design features require separate subscriptions, increasing total cost
- Smaller user community compared to AutoCAD or other mainstream CAD platforms

Which should you pick?
Choose RealityScan if
- You need photogrammetric reconstruction.
- You want to start without paying.
- You work on Windows.
- You also want laser scan fusion.
Choose Solid Edge if
- You need synchronous technology.
- You work on Windows.
- You also want parametric modeling.
Questions people ask
- Is RealityScan or Solid Edge better?
- Neither clearly leads. RealityScan starts at Free and Solid Edge at $1/month, and user ratings are close enough to be indistinguishable. Choose on capability and platform support.
- Which is cheaper, RealityScan or Solid Edge?
- RealityScan has a free tier; the other does not. Paid plans start at Free for RealityScan and $1/month for Solid Edge.
- Does RealityScan or Solid Edge run on more platforms?
- Both run on Windows, so platform support will not decide this one for you.
- Can I use RealityScan for free?
- Yes. RealityScan has a free tier, so you can try it without paying. Solid Edge starts at $1/month.
- What is RealityScan best used for?
- RealityScan is most often used for a two-person heritage survey practice under the revenue threshold that can now run professional photogrammetry at no licence cost, a film or games asset team scanning props and environments at very high image counts where processing speed decides the schedule, a survey firm combining terrestrial laser scans with drone photography and needing both aligned in a single reconstruction, a construction reality-capture operator producing meshes for unreal-based client visualisation from the same source imagery. Of those, a two-person heritage survey practice under the revenue threshold that can now run professional photogrammetry at no licence cost and a film or games asset team scanning props and environments at very high image counts where processing speed decides the schedule are not what Solid Edge is typically brought in for.
- What can RealityScan do that Solid Edge cannot?
- RealityScan covers Photogrammetric reconstruction, Laser scan fusion, Ground control points, Texturing and unwrapping. Solid Edge covers Synchronous technology, Parametric modeling, Sheet metal, Simulation.
Answered from the vendors’ own pages
RealityScan: Is RealityCapture still called that?
No. Epic rebranded it to RealityScan with version 2.0 in 2025. It is the same engine and the same team.
Solid Edge: What is Solid Edge's pricing model?
Solid Edge uses a flexible, usage-based subscription model. New customers can get their first month for $1 and cancel anytime, with pay-as-you-go pricing for additional capabilities without complex upgrades or procurement delays.
SourceRealityScan: Who gets it free?
Individuals and companies with annual revenue under one million US dollars. Above that, a seat is 1,250 US dollars per year.
Solid Edge: What platforms does Solid Edge run on?
Solid Edge is a cloud-based 3D CAD software accessed through the Designcenter platform. It supports web browsers and can be accessed from any device with cloud synchronization.
SourceRealityScan: Can I still buy a perpetual licence?
Not for new purchases. Existing perpetual licences remain valid for the version owned, with updates only under the current terms.
Solid Edge: What are Solid Edge's core CAD features?
Solid Edge includes part and assembly design, automated drawings, basic animation, rendering, comprehensive sheet metal design, model-based definition (MBD), and simulation tools. Advanced features like generative design and AI-powered drawing creation are available as add-ons.
SourceRealityScan: Does the free version restrict output?
No output metering or watermarking; the restriction is on who qualifies, based on company revenue, not on what you export.
Solid Edge: Does Solid Edge support augmented reality?
Yes, Solid Edge allows designers to review designs in augmented reality (AR) on phones and tablets. Users can view, measure, and markup CAD files on any device.
SourceSolid Edge: How does Solid Edge integrate with other Siemens products?
Designcenter Solid Edge has out-of-the-box integrations with Teamcenter and Teamcenter X for lifecycle management. CAM XaaS products work with Solid Edge, and it provides secure data management and seamless integration with third-party applications.
SourceSolid Edge: What are the key differences between Solid Edge and Siemens NX?
Solid Edge is Siemens' mid-range 3D CAD solution positioned for smaller teams and general mechanical design. Siemens NX is the advanced PLM system for complex manufacturing and enterprise design workflows.
